About the team

The third party property and motor team is a group of professionals dedicated to providing technical expertise and excellent customer service. The team manages claims from initial notification to resolution, working closely with policy holders, brokers, delegated authority partners, and panel solicitors to achieve the best outcomes.

About the role

As a Claims Handler you’ll be responsible for delivering a high standard of claims service across a varied portfolio of third party property damage and motor claims. You’ll work closely with underwriters, share insights on claim trends, contribute to business initiatives and projects, and help continuously enhance the customer experience.

Location: York or Colchester, with flexibility for candidates based in the North (e.g., Leeds or Manchester) who can travel to York on a regular, weekly basis.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the key internal claims handling and relationship contact for motor claims, including taking referrals, handling claims outside delegated authority, and managing supplier relationships.
  • Manage a portfolio of third party property damage claims under public liability policies valued up to £100k, overseeing the entire claims lifecycle from first notification to conclusion.
  • Set claim strategy, handle claims in-house where possible, and implement prevention strategies to avoid formal claims against customers.
  • Select, instruct, and actively manage law firms and experts, including indemnity and costs management.
  • Liaise and negotiate with clients, brokers, claimants, and representatives, attending mediations, JSMs, and court hearings.
  • Proactively manage the claims portfolio in accordance with underwriting guidelines, KPIs and SLAs.
  • Identify fraudulent claims and opportunities for recovery, providing strategic claims handling to maximise benefits.
  • Identify trends and concerns, reporting regularly to key stakeholders and contributing to meetings and training sessions.
  • Develop and manage relationships with internal stakeholders (underwriters, Customer Relations, Wordings, Conduct) and external stakeholders (insureds, brokers, law firms, experts), demonstrating commercial awareness.
  • Provide technical advice and guidance on coverage and strategy to insureds.
  • Support continuous improvement of the Claims operation, embracing new technologies such as Co-Pilot and digital tools.
  • Participate in group, UK or Claims-wide projects and change programmes, offering subject-matter expertise as required.

Qualifications

  • Experience in handling motor claims with emphasis on policy coverage, gained as a claims handler or within a TPA/DA or law firm.
  • Special investigation/fraud experience in motor claims is advantageous.
  • Previous experience handling third party property damage claims under public liability policies is advantageous but not essential.
  • Experience managing claims end-to-end, including solicitor instruction and claim strategy oversight.
  • Sound knowledge of pre-action protocols and civil litigation.
  • Demonstrable experience applying policy wording and assessing coverage/liability.
  • Background in insurance claims handling or a legal environment (law firm/paralegal).
  • Strong organisational skills, able to manage multiple claims and prioritise under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to provide reassurance and build trust with customers.
  • Willingness to obtain professional qualifications such as CII, CILex or equivalent.
