Job Type: Permanent

Location: York, Glasgow or Colchester. Flexibility for candidates based in the North (e.g., Leeds or Manchester) who can travel to York regularly. Glasgow candidates must have experience handling England & Wales cases.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver a high standard of claims service across a varied portfolio of Bodily Injury, Medical Malpractice and Third Party Property Damage claims.
  • Investigate and manage claims from first notification to conclusion, including pre-litigation to final settlement or court hearing for third-party claims.
  • Review and confirm policy coverage position; reach decisions in-house with increasing confidence.
  • Set claim strategy, handle in-house where possible, implement claim prevention strategies to avoid formal claims.
  • Select, instruct and actively manage law firms and other experts, including proactive indemnity and cost management.
  • Liaise and negotiate with clients, brokers, claimants and their representatives; attend mediations, JSMs and court hearings.
  • Manage the claims portfolio proactively in accordance with the CUG and relevant KPIs and SLAs.
  • Identify fraudulent claims and recovery opportunities, report trends and concerns to key stakeholders via Trilogy Light, internal training sessions and claims managers.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders (RUMs, RMs, product and sector heads, customer relations, CWG, conduct) and external stakeholders (insureds, brokers, law firms, other experts). Demonstrate commercial awareness.
  • Take referrals from DAs on coverage, strategy and reallocation to the internal claims team; provide technical advice and guidance to insureds.
  • Assist in continuous improvement of the Claims operation in line with the current Claims strategy; embrace new technologies such as Co-Pilot and digital tools.
  • Participate in Group, UK or Claims-wide projects and change programmes affecting claims operations; provide SME assistance as required.

Qualifications and Required Experience

  • Strong experience handling Third Party liability Bodily Injury and/or Medical Malpractice claims as an insurance claims handler or within a law firm.
  • Experience managing claims end-to-end, including instruction of solicitors and oversight of claim strategy.
  • Solid understanding of pre-action protocols and civil litigation.
  • Demonstrable experience applying policy wording and assessing coverage/liability.
  • Background in insurance claims handling or a legal environment (law firm / paralegal).
  • Exposure to insurance policy coverage for liability claims is highly beneficial.
  • Experience handling Third Party Property Damage claims is advantageous but not essential.
  • Strong organisational skills, ability to manage multiple claims and prioritise effectively under pressure.
  • Experience working with multiple stakeholders (brokers, solicitors, policyholders).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide reassurance and build trust with customers.

Additional Requirements

  • Willingness to obtain professional qualifications such as CII, CILex or equivalent.
