Build a brilliant future with Hiscox. The London Market division of Hiscox focuses on big ticket speciality risks such as Marine and Energy, Major Property, Casualty, Crisis Management and Portfolio Solutions, and is regarded a leader in these fields. These present complex challenges with innovative technology solutions underpinning them. The team is value orientated, high performing with strong business sponsorship, also cultivating deep partnerships with Microsoft and Google to deliver unique and award-winning solutions.

The London Market tech team is a modern, agile technology department seeking to work as closely as possible with our colleagues across the company to deliver true business value in an agile fashion. We are a group of engineers (Software, Data, Quality, Platform), data scientists and agile practitioners. We organise ourselves into chapters according to these professional disciplines. You would be joining our Software Engineering Chapter.

From these chapters we build cross-functional squads aimed at delivering business value in particular areas. These are tight-knit Scrum teams working closely with product owners and business stakeholders to determine what insights are required and working to deliver them. Our engineers are enthusiastic in applying technology to drive results and advocate for appropriate solutions.

The role involves working collaboratively with your squad and stakeholders, taking a technical leading role in shaping and delivering business outcomes. You will write and review clean, maintainable code, guiding others on best practices such as SOLID principles, design patterns, unit testing, peer reviews, and CI/CD processes. Ensure documentation is accurate and up to date, and mentor team members on maintaining high-quality story documentation and technical clarity.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Actively support and mentor team members by sharing knowledge, providing guidance, and fostering a culture of continuous learning.
  • Guide and contribute to solution design, working closely with stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable and maintainable implementations.
  • Collaborate with engineers across teams to influence and evolve our architecture, promoting best practices and alignment.
  • Champion security and engineering standards, ensuring your work and that of the team adheres to organisational guidelines.
  • Adopt new ways of working, including AI-assisted development tools, and help the team navigate the evolving engineering landscape.
  • Foster effective collaboration with distributed teams across the United Kingdom, Portugal, Poland, and India, promoting alignment and consistency in delivery.

Skills required include holding an academic degree in a related field (or 5+ years employment in a Software Engineering role), demonstrating increasing responsibility in delivery and technical decision-making. Strong, hands-on experience in C# and .NET, with the ability to design, develop, and review high-quality code, and in writing effective unit tests is essential. A strong background in SQL, with proven experience in designing, optimising, and maintaining databases in production environments is also necessary.

Additional skills include solid experience with CI/CD pipelines and a strong understanding of source control systems and branching strategies. Experience with Azure technologies such as Azure Functions, Azure SQL, Azure Storage, Azure API Management (APIM) and Azure Service Bus is beneficial, especially in designing and implementing event-driven or messaging-based architectures. Familiarity with modern front-end technologies such as Blazor, Angular, or React is advantageous.

Behaviours expected include demonstrating strong technical competence and taking ownership of delivering high-quality software solutions. Clear communication and effective collaboration with team members, stakeholders, and cross-functional partners is crucial. Being open to feedback, actively learning new technologies, and sharing knowledge with colleagues to support team success is important.

At Hiscox, we care about our people. We hire the best people for the job and we’re committed to diversity and creating a truly inclusive culture, which we believe drives success. We have adopted hybrid ways of working to encourage a healthy work-life balance.
