We are recruiting for an Intermediate Consultant in UX Design to support our mission. We work at the intersection of strategy, design, and technology to solve complex problems and create lasting value for our clients and their users.

As an Intermediate consultant in UX Design you will play an important role in helping Hippo become the best consultancy out there. You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team combining data, design, product, delivery, analysis, and engineering to deliver bespoke digital services that make a positive and meaningful impact on organisations and society. You will act as an Intermediate Consultant to deliver UX Design services to our clients, taking user needs and business goals and applying a pragmatic, user‑centred approach to design, test and iterate intuitive, accessible, and attractive digital experiences. You will work closely with researchers and developers to ensure your designs are grounded in evidence and technically feasible. Our solutions empower our customers to build and support secure, scalable, and well‑engineered systems. The Intermediate consultant in UX Design will be a key player and implementer in this.

Your Role in a Nutshell

  • Work with colleagues and client SMEs to define user and business problems, guide collaborative ideation and follow an iterative, evidence‑based design cycle.
  • Create wireframes, prototypes, and high‑fidelity designs that solve specific user problems.
  • Use and contribute to design systems to ensure consistency and quality across digital products.
  • Participate in user research sessions and translate findings into design iterations.
  • Facilitate design workshops and “crits” to gather feedback and align the team on the best creative direction.
  • Collaborate with developers to ensure designs are clearly communicated and meet user needs when built.
  • Ensure all designs meet accessibility standards (WCAG) and are inclusive by default.

About the Candidate

Essential Experience

  • Experience in UX/UI design within an Agile delivery environment.
  • Proficiency with design tools such as Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating your design process, from problem definition, through initial sketches and testing to finished products.
  • Understanding of user‑centred design (UCD) principles and how to apply them.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience working on public sector projects or following GDS Service Standards.
  • Basic knowledge of front‑end technologies (HTML/CSS) for high‑fidelity code prototyping and to better collaborate with engineering teams.
  • Experience contributing to an internal community of practice or external meet‑ups/communities by sharing design trends and knowledge.
  • ‘T‑shaped’ experience of other professions (e.g. user research, UX writing, service design).

Hippo Locations

We are headquartered in Leeds and have offices across the UK in Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham, London and Bristol. Candidates should be located within reasonable travelling distance from one of our offices and should be willing to travel to an in‑ or out‑of‑town client location for a number of days per week (client dependent), typically at least two days per week. We offer a generous relocation support package of up to £8,000.
