We are seeking to employ an Senior Utilities Consultant to be based in our London office.
Hilson Moran are interdisciplinary consultants, engineers and advisors, applying progressive design thinking to shape the environments we live in. We provide a full range of engineering services, exciting innovation and design solutions on a full range of projects from across our network of offices in the UK.
Our recently refurbished London office – the Living Lab – offers a direct link to clients, the ability to further develop our existing relationships and to pursue future opportunities across the city. We also have full view of some of our most iconic designs, including 20 Fenchurch Street ‘the Walkie Talkie’ and 30 St Mary’s Axe ‘The Gherkin’ from our river café space.
We are seeking to employ an full time Senior Utilities Consultant within our Infrastructure and Environment team. Our existing team are a market leading provider of utilities and energy infrastructure on some of the UK’s largest and most visible construction/development projects.
Our ‘Infrastructure Services’ team provides technical, commercial and procurement advice to large and often prestigious commercial, residential and mixed-use developers. We tend to support large regeneration and masterplanning projects from early infrastructure planning through to installation and commissioning of multi-utility, foul/surface water/SuDs and mobility services, and uniquely we manage the alteration of existing utility networks in very constrained (often below ground) spaces to de-risk some of the UK’s most prestigious development projects.
We provide expertise in regard water, wastewater (and SuDS), district heating/cooling, electricity, telecommunication networks and mobility-based solutions.
Your Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To

  • Together with our Associates/Associate Directors meet with commercial and residential developers and/or landowners to understand their technical needs and commercial drivers and develop proposals that meet their needs.
  • Once appointed by a client then consult with utility undertakers and other utility, energy and data service providers to understand opportunities, risks and costs associated with our client’s development proposals and advise of these risks, costs and opportunities via meetings, sketches, presentations and reports.
  • Develop utility designs directly and via third parties and coordinate (using our in-house Engineering and CAD Technicians as required), often to support a client’s groundworks tender, whereby tender and contract drawings will be developed.
  • Procure the services of specialist utility and multi-utility contractors and undertakers by developing scopes and specifications as part of a wider Employers Requirement document using drawings and other documents as required. This might be new connections related work, early utility enabling works, or likely both.
  • Manage the delivery of critical utility enabling and new connection works often alongside third-party Project Management and Cost Consultancy Practises.
  • Report back to our client on progress and issue any relevant instructions to contractors.
  • Lead utilities progress meetings as required to progress the works.
  • Review as-constructed data and closeout or reconcile final costs.
  • Using timesheets understand your impact on project costs and profitability.
  • Take ownership of the delivery of all the above under the direction of a Project or Associate Director and utilising wider resources within Hilson Moran.

Background & Qualifications
  • Experience in planning, design and procurement of new utilities (and energy networks) in support of a wide array of commercial and residential development projects but often large multi-phase mixed-use greenfield or residential led urban regeneration projects.
  • Experience in delivery of complex utility enabling works including temporary and permanent diversions and disconnections within major building projects often in constrained urban environments.
  • Experience in influencing verbally through sketches (We use Bluebeam) and written word (reports), spreadsheet skills.
  • Understanding and past working relationship with Commercial and or residential developers, utility undertakers and independent utility or energy network operators.
  • Commercial understanding of utilities infrastructure including costs and programme risks, as well as their own costs.
  • A proven awareness of both the Planning Process and RIBA Stages, and how activities fit into these.
  • Analytical and fresh thinking abilities to identify issues and suggest solutions before they become a problem to the client.
  • Specific academic qualifications are not required you will be working with professional and chartered engineers, town planners, architects and project managers.
Skills
  • Presentation and spreadsheet skills with the ability to check technical documents is a necessity.
  • High proficiency with standard MS programmes and specifically; Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
  • Have great attention to detail
  • Self-starter and be able to plan your own workload.
