Our client is a leading industrial manufacturing company operating in Lydney. With a strong emphasis on operational excellence, safety, and innovation, they are seeking a proactive and skilled Shift Mechanical Fitter to join their engineering team.
The Role
To provide preventative maintenance and mechanical breakdown services across the site, ensuring the plant equipment operates efficiently, reliably, and safely. The role supports operational departments to maintain high standards of performance, equipment availability, and safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform mechanical maintenance and breakdown response across the mill to reduce downtime and increase reliability.
- Diagnose faults and carry out repairs on rotating and static mechanical equipment.
- Conduct routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and corrective actions using SAP and other CMMS tools.
- Support root cause analysis of equipment failure and recommend improvements.
- Safely operate under the Mechanical and Electrical permit systems; issue certificates/permits as needed.
- Conduct rigging, lifting, alignment, and fabrication duties as part of equipment installations or modifications.
- Work with the day engineering teams to address longer-term issues and implement continuous improvements.
- Comply with site safety regulations, reporting incidents or near misses to enhance occupational safety.
- Maintain records of work completed and parts used, ensuring proper stock management via the stores system.
- Support Management of Change (MOC) processes for engineering plant modifications.
- Inspect, tension, and replace transmission belts.
- Align, inspect, and maintain bearings and couplings.
- Service pumps, refiners, agitators, fans, compressors, and ancillary equipment.
- Maintain and replace mechanical seals and packing.
- Machine parts using turning, milling, and grinding.
- Carry out hydraulic and pneumatic system diagnostics and repairs.
Essential
Qualifications & Experience Required
- NVQ Level 3 / City & Guilds Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- Solid knowledge of mechanical engineering principles.
- Strong hands-on experience in maintenance and fault diagnosis in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- Experience using CMMS systems (e.g. SAP) for scheduling and feedback.
- Familiarity with Health & Safety legislation and safe systems of work.
Desirable
- Knowledge of hydraulic/pneumatic systems and their maintenance.
- Basic machining and fabrication capability.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Team player with a flexible, can-do approach.
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines under pressure.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Computer literate, especially in maintenance software systems.
