Overview
Independent Chair / Non‑Executive Director. Hilltop Community Sports Limited (Company No. 06875623). Hilltop Community Sports Limited is a not‑for‑profit community sports organisation based in Ebbw Vale, Blaenau Gwent. We use sport and physical activity to improve health, inclusion, and opportunities for local people. We are seeking an Independent Chair (also appointed as a Non‑Executive Director) to lead our Board, strengthen governance, and help us scale impact across the community.
The role (brief outline)
Provide inclusive, effective leadership of the Board and ensure strong governance and compliance. Set the agenda and chair Board meetings, ensuring clear decisions, follow‑through, and accountability. Work with the Board and senior volunteers/staff to shape strategy, oversee risk, safeguarding, and financial stewardship. Support stakeholder relationships (community partners, clubs, local authority, funders, schools). Champion equality, diversity and inclusion and uphold our values and code of conduct. Act as an ambassador for Hilltop Community Sports in Blaenau Gwent and beyond.
Key responsibilities
- Governance and compliance: ensure adherence to company law and best‑practice governance for community organisations.
- Strategy and performance: facilitate strategy setting; review delivery, outcomes, and impact.
- Risk and safeguarding: maintain appropriate policies and a learning, safeguarding culture.
- Finance and fundraising oversight: scrutinise budgets and management accounts; support sustainable income.
- Board effectiveness: recruit, induct and develop trustees/directors; ensure productive meetings and annual Board evaluation.
Person specification
- Proven experience chairing boards or committees, ideally in sport, community development, health, youth or education.
- Strong governance knowledge (not‑for‑profit/third sector or SME), with sound judgment and integrity.
- Understanding of finance, risk, and safeguarding in community settings.
- Excellent facilitation, communication and stakeholder skills; able to build consensus and make decisions.
- Commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion; understanding of local community needs.
- Knowledge of Blaenau Gwent/Ebbw Vale context desirable; Welsh language skills welcomed.
Terms
- Status: Independent, non‑executive; appointment as Company Director.
- Time commitment: Approx. 1–2 days per month (board meetings typically bi monthly plus prep and occasional events).
- Location: Ebbw Vale.
- Remuneration: Voluntary.
