PURPOSE OF THE JOB To work under the direction of the Senior Leadership Team and teachers to support high-quality teaching and learning. To complement the delivery of the curriculum and contribute to school improvement, pupil progress and the development of support staff. To contribute to and support the full planning cycle, including lesson design, delivery and evaluation. To plan, prepare and deliver lessons to individuals, groups and whole classes, including covering classes during PPA and short-term teacher absence. To support pupils’ academic, social and emotional development, promoting independence and inclusion. To demonstrate a clear understanding of safeguarding procedures in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE).
Main Duties
- Planning
- Contribute to and support the full teaching and learning cycle, including lesson planning, delivery, evaluation and adaptation.
- Work collaboratively with teachers to design engaging and inclusive learning activities that meet the needs of all pupils.
- Plan and prepare lessons for individuals, groups and whole classes in line with the National Curriculum.
- Develop and adapt high-quality resources to support learning, responding to pupil need and ability.
- Contribute to the planning and organisation of learning beyond the classroom, including educational visits and enrichment opportunities.
- Teaching and Learning
- Deliver high-quality teaching to individuals, small groups and whole classes within an agreed framework.
- Provide lesson cover during teachers’ PPA time and short-term absence, ensuring continuity of learning.
- Use a range of effective and engaging teaching strategies to motivate pupils and promote progress.
- Promote high expectations of behaviour, engagement and achievement in line with school policy.
- Lead and implement effective behaviour management strategies, fostering a positive and purposeful learning environment.
- Promote equality, diversity and inclusion, ensuring all pupils have access to high-quality learning regardless of need or background.
- Support pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including those with EHCPs, using the graduated approach (Assess, Plan, Do, Review).
- Promote pupils’ independence, resilience and self-confidence through effective support and challenge.
- Establish positive and professional relationships with pupils, acting as a role model for behaviour and attitudes to learning.
- Support effective communication with parents and carers, contributing to meetings and providing feedback on pupil progress where appropriate.
- Monitoring and Assessment
- Use assessment information to inform planning and adapt teaching to meet the needs of all learners.
- Provide clear and constructive feedback to pupils to support their learning and development.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of pupil progress and attainment.
- Contribute to whole-school assessment processes.
- Work collaboratively with teaching staff to evaluate the effectiveness of learning and identify areas for improvement.
- Pastoral And Safeguarding
- Promote a safe, inclusive and supportive school environment where all pupils feel valued and respected.
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures in line with KCSIE and school policies.
- Recognise and respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns, reporting them in accordance with school procedures.
- Support pupils’ social, emotional and mental health needs, promoting wellbeing and resilience.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with parents/carers to support pupils’ learning and development.
- Support effective supervision of pupils at breaktimes and other non-classroom times, ensuring safety and positive behaviour.
- Work collaboratively with external agencies and professionals to support individual pupil needs where appropriate.
