The Risk & Compliance Manager role will play a critical part in the continued success of the team by providing expert guidance on core risk and compliance matters, overseeing key risk management processes and partnering with stakeholders across the firm to drive a strong culture of compliance, continuous improvement and effective risk management. The role will support the firm's strategic objectives through the identification, assessment and management of regulatory, operational and professional risks while ensuring consistent quality standards and regulatory compliance.

Key responsibilities:

  • Supporting the management of the firm's professional indemnity claims processes, identifying potential circumstances that may result in a claim against the firm and providing advice and guidance to stakeholders on appropriate risk mitigation and reporting requirements.
  • Maintaining oversight of all potential claims and circumstances, ensuring accurate and complete records are maintained, analysing trends and emerging risks, and providing regular reporting to senior management.
  • Acting as a key point of contact for partners, legal teams and business services functions regarding claims-related matters, ensuring timely escalation and resolution of issues requiring senior attention.
  • Supporting the management of relationships with insurers and brokers, coordinating information requests, supporting renewal activities and ensuring the firm fulfils its obligations under relevant insurance arrangements.
  • Overseeing the Small Claims Bordereaux process, ensuring accurate submissions, monitoring trends and providing recommendations to improve risk management outcomes.
  • Providing guidance and oversight in relation to data retention requirements associated with claims and investigations, ensuring compliance with regulatory and internal policy requirements.
  • Supporting the firm's complaints management framework, providing advice and guidance to stakeholders on complaint handling, regulatory obligations and best practice approaches to resolution.
  • Overseeing the complaints register and associated reporting processes, ensuring accurate records are maintained and identifying trends, root causes and opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Monitoring complaint investigations and responses across the firm, challenging and supporting stakeholders to ensure regulatory deadlines and service standards are achieved.
  • Supporting the Director and Head of Risk & Compliance in analysing and resolving conflicts of interests, gathering the necessary information to assess the regulatory position and communicating with stakeholders.
  • Working closely with the Data Protection team to assess and manage risk arising from data breaches and information security incidents.
  • Assessing the wider regulatory, legal and operational risk implications arising from SRA and other breach incidents and ensuring appropriate reporting, escalation and remediation activities are implemented.
  • Managing the Risk & Compliance team's shared workload and mailbox processes, ensuring queries are triaged appropriately, responded to effectively and resolved within agreed service standards.
  • Providing technical guidance and support to colleagues across the business on regulatory, risk and compliance matters, promoting consistent application of policies and procedures.
  • Reviewing, drafting and maintaining Risk & Compliance policies, procedures and guidance materials to ensure alignment with legislative, regulatory and business requirements.
  • Supporting the development, implementation and continuous improvement of the firm's risk management and compliance frameworks.
  • Producing management information, risk reports and trend analysis for senior leadership, identifying emerging risks, areas of concern and opportunities to strengthen controls and compliance practices.

What are we looking for:

Important criteria:

  • Significant experience working within a regulated environment, preferably within a legal or professional services organisation, with strong knowledge of Solicitors Regulation Authority regulations and Codes of Conduct.
  • Demonstrable experience managing risk, compliance, complaints, claims or regulatory matters and providing practical advice to stakeholders at varying levels of seniority.
  • Strong analytical, organisational and communication skills with the ability to assess complex issues and provide clear, risk-based recommendations.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel, including analysis and reporting of management information.

  • Experience of drafting, implementing and improving policies, procedures and governance frameworks.
  • Ability to build effective relationships with senior stakeholders and influence positive risk and compliance outcomes.
