At Raspberry Pi, we are proud to foster an environment where those who work with us can do what they love and do it well. By joining Raspberry Pi, you’ll be adding to a lean and passionate team dedicated to democratising technology and providing affordable access to computing tools to people across the globe.

We are currently seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Trade and Compliance Lawyer to join our small but highly productive legal team. As part of the legal team, you will provide invaluable insight and expertise in international trade compliance and sanctions, along with all other regulatory and compliance matters, addressing the diverse array of challenges encountered by a global technology company.

We are looking for someone with a minimum of 8 PQE, preferably with experience working in-house at a UK-listed technology company (though this is not essential). We are also looking for someone who loves to work collaboratively and communicate with people across the entire business; the successful candidate will be working closely with the commercial and finance teams in particular. You will be commercial and pragmatic in your outlook, with the ability to take a risk-based approach when advising the business on legal and commercial risks. This role is full‑time and reports to the General Counsel based in our office on the Science Park in Cambridge. Part‑time and remote working may also be considered.

As a subject matter expert, you will offer advisory support regarding sanctions and export controls, licensing risks, and compliance with various global sanctions regimes including those imposed by the UK, EU, UN, and the US as well as internal group policies. Ideally, you will also have broader experience in areas such as IP, competition law, GDPR, and ABC, along with managing governance policy frameworks.

The role will involve advising on risk management decisions related to suppliers, customers, and transactions with sanctions and regulatory compliance implications, providing expert advice and training, determining appropriate risk controls, and leading regulatory reporting processes for sanctions and other matters within the organisation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and provide subject matter expertise to the wider advisory team on regulatory compliance and sanctions, as well as other related matters, including: (i) export controls; (ii) anti-bribery law; (iii) anti-money laundering; (iv) international public law; (v) trade/WTO law; (vi) competition law and GDPR compliance; (vii) tariff and electrical regulatory matters; (viii) governance policy frameworks.
  • Ensure we have properly evaluated the need for and obtained, where necessary, appropriate export control licences.
  • Advise on risk management decisions regarding compliance and potential sanctions-related issues and provide support to key compliance committees (advising internal teams, auditors, and the Audit Committee).
  • Support commercial deals and provide guidance on required wording in agreements.
  • Determine and advise on appropriate controls to mitigate sanctions and export risks related to customer relationships, transactions, and products.
  • Draft and submit disclosures to relevant regulatory bodies (if needed).
  • Stay abreast of legal and regulatory mandates and developments to ensure compliance policies and procedures remain current and accurate; ensure sanctions risk is managed in line with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrate ability to engage business line managers to facilitate the timely implementation of new procedures and legal requirements.
  • Identify trade control risks and devise and implement risk management measures.
  • Provide legal guidance and ongoing compliance support for tariff administration, rate schedules, and regulatory filings relating to tariff and electrical regulatory matters, working with the appropriate regulatory and utility bodies.
  • Monitor the performance of business units to ensure adequate implementation of legal compliance requirements, e.g. audits.
  • Conduct and review regulatory compliance due diligence for prospective business ventures and acquisitions.
  • Respond to general risk queries from the business, assist with regulatory authorities/external auditors, and implement recommendations and any mandatory measures.
  • Be responsible for developing company awareness of and adherence to critical compliance matters, provisioning training where necessary.

This is not an exhaustive list, as we are a fast-moving business and new challenges present themselves all the time.

Qualifications

  • Experience as a qualified solicitor or barrister with a strong academic background.
  • Demonstrable expertise in international trade (with significant prior experience essential in some, but not necessarily all, aspects of international trade).
  • High-quality work standards.
  • Advanced communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Team‑player attitude, with the ability to work well both in a team and individually.
  • Good judgement and attention to detail.
  • Ability to provide accurate legal advice in a commercial and pragmatic way.
  • Hands‑on approach, with an ability to manage a variety of matters; someone who is not afraid to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in.
  • Enjoys working in a small team in a high‑performing entrepreneurial environment.
  • An interest in technology, with an ability to communicate technical matters succinctly and clearly (without any jargon).

The breadth of our business means that we are always growing and coming up against new challenges, which keeps work interesting. If you are proactive, organised, and technically proficient, with excellent legal professional skills, we would very much like you to apply for this role.

Benefits

  • Employer pension contributions of 8% when the employee contributes 4% of their gross salary into the company salary sacrifice pension scheme.
  • Life assurance of 4 base salary.
  • Income protection of 75% of base salary in the event of critical illness, commencing after 13 weeks of long‑term illness or absence from work.
  • Private medical insurance (medical history disregarded).
  • Access to our electric vehicle salary sacrifice scheme, subject to eligibility.
