We are seeking a technically skilled and customer-focused Packaging Equipment Engineer to join our engineering team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the installation, commissioning, servicing, troubleshooting, and ongoing technical support of advanced packaging machinery and equipment. We are particularly interested in candidates with a strong background in electrical and electronic systems, ideally with experience working on automated machinery, PLCs, drives, sensors, HMIs, and associated control systems. This is a hands-on engineering role requiring a combination of technical expertise, problem-solving ability, and strong customer-facing skills. You will work closely with customers, internal engineering teams, and colleagues across the business to ensure packaging equipment operates safely, efficiently, and reliably.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, commission, maintain, service, and repair packaging machinery at customer sites.
- Diagnose and resolve electrical, electronic, control, and mechanical faults on complex packaging equipment.
- Troubleshoot PLC-controlled machinery, industrial control systems, sensors, actuators, variable-speed drives, servo systems, and HMIs.
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, pneumatic diagrams, and technical documentation.
- Carry out machine commissioning and ensure equipment is correctly configured and operating to specification.
- Provide technical support to customers both remotely and on-site.
- Identify recurring faults and recommend improvements to machine reliability and performance.
- Assist with machine upgrades, modifications, retrofits, and equipment optimisation.
- Work with PLC and automation systems to diagnose faults and, where appropriate, make software or parameter adjustments.
- Liaise with technical, engineering, production, and customer service teams to resolve technical issues efficiently.
- Provide customers with clear guidance and training on the operation, maintenance, and safe use of equipment.
- Complete service reports, commissioning documentation, and other technical records accurately.
- Maintain a high standard of health and safety while working on customer sites.
- Represent the business professionally and build strong working relationships with customers.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Relevant engineering qualification or equivalent practical engineering experience.
- Strong practical knowledge of electrical and electronic engineering systems.
- Experience troubleshooting and maintaining automated industrial machinery or equipment.
- Ability to read and understand electrical schematics and control-system documentation.
- Experience with PLC-controlled equipment and industrial automation.
- Good understanding of motors, drives, sensors, relays, contactors, safety circuits, and control systems.
- Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
- Ability to work independently and methodically when resolving complex technical problems.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Willingness to travel to customer sites and, where required, stay away from home.
Desirable Experience
- Experience in one or more of the following would be advantageous: Packaging machinery or food-processing equipment.
- PLC programming or diagnostics, particularly Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or similar platforms.
- Servo motors and motion-control systems.
- Variable-frequency drives and motor control.
- Industrial networking and communications.
- HMI and SCADA systems.
- Machine safety systems and safety PLCs.
- Pneumatic and electromechanical systems.
- Robotics or automated production lines.
- Electrical installation, panel building, or machine wiring.
- CE/UKCA machinery safety requirements and relevant electrical standards.
- Previous field-service or customer-facing engineering experience.
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for an engineer who combines strong electrical and electronic engineering capability with excellent practical fault-finding skills. You will be naturally curious, technically minded, and comfortable working on complex automated machinery. You should enjoy diagnosing problems, understanding how systems interact, and finding effective solutions rather than simply replacing components. The role also requires someone who can communicate confidently with customers, explain technical issues clearly, and remain professional when working under pressure. A background in electrical engineering, electronic engineering, controls, automation, or mechatronics would be particularly well suited to this position.
What We Offer
- The opportunity to work with advanced packaging and automation technology.
- A varied, hands-on engineering role with significant technical exposure.
- Ongoing technical training and professional development.
- The opportunity to work directly with customers across a range of industries.
- Supportive and technically experienced engineering teams.
- Competitive salary and benefits package.
