A full-time, fixed-term teacher of Design Technology and Engineering is required to start as soon as possible for this academically selective, coeducational North London day school. The initial contract will run until the end of the 2026/27 academic year, though there is the possibility of making the position permanent for the right candidate. The role might suit a qualified teacher from the state or independent sectors or a well-qualified graduate in a relevant discipline who wishes to become a teacher. Highgate welcomes applications from people without classroom experience.
Highgate's Design, Technology and Engineering Department spans throughout the curriculum from KS1-5. All the content of the DTE curriculum is linked to context, the outside world and is interdisciplinary in nature. Former Design Technology & Engineering students go on to have exciting, rewarding and innovative careers, ranging from Rolls Royce, TfL and Dyson to mention a few.
We help students become creative problem solvers as individuals and as members of a team, by equipping them with transferable hard and soft skills; such as empathy and the iterative design process to tackle today's and tomorrow's global problems. One of them being sustainability, which is a key element of the DTE curriculum. We also help develop confidence through individual curiosity, experimentation, and having fun. All of this is amplified by the excellent and dynamic teaching in the department, utilising state of the art workshops and robotic equipment as well as the enrichment outside of the classroom, including exclusive industry visits and encouraging all students to compete in international STEM competitions.
At GCSE we follow the OCR specification called Design Technology which allows for students to explore a variety of topics, from user centred design to robotics and work with materials and processes, such as 3D printing, textiles and welding. From this great foundation at GCSE, we then offer two A-levels, Design Engineering and Product Design.
Our extra curriculum offering is very extensive, and we enter a range of different national STEM competitions, ranging from Vex robotics to CanSat (simulations of a real satellite). We also enter students into the Arkwright Engineering Scholarship programme.
