Freelance Site Engineer - Job Specification

Start Date: ASAP

Contract Type: Freelance (Inside IR35)

Contract Length: 6 months+

Hours: 50 hours per week (07:30-17:30)

Project Overview

Our Client requires a Freelance Site Engineer to support a major civils and highways project. The scheme includes significant earthworks, drainage installation and new road construction.

  • 3 million m³ of earth to move
  • 7km of boundary fencing
  • 4km of new road and highway construction
  • 8km of drainage installation

Role Overview

The Freelance Site Engineer will carry out day-to-day engineering duties across the project, ensuring accurate setting out, quality control and compliance with design specifications. You will support the Section Engineer and Site Management teams to deliver works safely and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out setting out, levelling and surveying for earthworks, drainage and highways packages.
  • Assist in managing subcontractors and support daily site coordination.
  • Ensure all works are delivered to the correct technical standards and specifications.
  • Maintain quality documentation, ITPs, check sheets and as-built records.
  • Support design interpretation and raise technical queries where required.
  • Ensure all site activities are compliant with H&S and environmental standards.
  • Record progress, report issues and support programme management.

Minimum Requirements

  • Ideally local to the project.
  • Proven experience in major earthworks, civils, drainage or highways construction.
  • Strong preference for candidates with Major Highways or HS2 experience.
  • Not suitable for candidates whose primary experience is Hinkley Point C.
  • Proficient with GPS, total stations and standard QA processes.
  • Able to work under an Inside IR35 freelance arrangement.
