We are looking to welcome a committed and enthusiastic GP Retainer to join our friendly and supportive practice in Cheslyn Hay. We are a well-established, patient-focused surgery with a strong team ethos, comprising 2 GP Partners, 1 ANP, 2 Practice Nurses, 1 Healthcare Assistant, 1 Phlebotomist, and a dedicated and experienced administrative team. Main duties of the job

  • The GP Retainer will provide high-quality, patient-centred care through face-to-face and telephone consultations, managing a broad range of acute and chronic conditions.
  • Duties include assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients with undifferentiated presentations, issuing prescriptions, reviewing results and correspondence, completing clinical administration, and making appropriate referrals.
  • The post-holder will work both autonomously and collaboratively within a supportive multidisciplinary team, contributing to continuity of care, clinical governance, and service development within the practice.

Job Summary

The GP Retainer will provide high-quality, patient-centred primary care within a supportive and well-established practice environment. The post-holder will manage a clinical caseload, delivering safe, effective, and evidence-based care to registered and temporary patients. The role offers flexibility in line with the GP Retainer Scheme while maintaining continuity of care and professional standards.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Provide face-to-face and telephone consultations in accordance with the agreed timetable.
  • Assess, diagnose, and manage patients presenting with acute, chronic, and undifferentiated conditions.
  • Make professional, autonomous clinical decisions in line with current guidelines and best practice.
  • Prescribe safely and appropriately in accordance with practice formulary and national guidance.
  • Review laboratory results, correspondence, and clinical documents in a timely manner.
  • Undertake home visits where clinically appropriate and agreed.
  • Develop and implement person-centred care plans.
  • Refer patients to secondary care or community services as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate, contemporaneous clinical records using the practice clinical system (EMIS).
  • Participate in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement activities as appropriate to sessions worked.

  • Work in accordance with practice policies, NICE guidance, and local pathways.
  • Contribute to audit, significant event analysis, and service improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain up-to-date clinical knowledge and skills through CPD and appraisal.

The GP Retainer will work collaboratively with 2 GP Partners, 1 ANP, 2 Practice Nurses, 1 Healthcare Assistant, 1 Phlebotomist, and a large and experienced administrative team to ensure safe, coordinated patient care.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Applicants must hold a recognised medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) and be fully registered with the General Medical Council with a current licence to practise.
  • Candidates must have completed GP Specialty Training and hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in General Practice or be on the GMC GP Register.
  • Applicants must meet appraisal and revalidation requirements and be eligible to work under the NHS GP Retainer Scheme.
  • Previous experience working within UK primary care or General Practice is desirable, particularly experience managing a broad range of acute and chronic conditions independently.
  • An interest in quality improvement, audit, or service development would be advantageous.
  • Experience working within a multidisciplinary team and within a Primary Care Network (PCN) setting would be beneficial.
  • Additional skills or special interests, such as women's health, chronic disease management, minor procedures, or teaching and mentoring, would also be welcomed.
  • Familiarity with EMIS or similar electronic patient record systems is desirable.

Experience

  • Applicants must have experience working as a General Practitioner within UK primary care, managing a wide range of acute, chronic, and undifferentiated presentations.
  • Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work autonomously, making safe and effective clinical decisions in line with current national and local guidelines.
  • Experience in prescribing independently, reviewing results and correspondence, and maintaining accurate contemporaneous clinical records is essential.
  • Applicants must also have experience working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and contributing to high standards of patient-centred care.
  • It is desirable for applicants to have experience running minor illness or long-term condition clinics, managing complex patient cases, and contributing to service development or quality improvement projects.
  • Experience teaching, mentoring, or supervising colleagues or medical students is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with Primary Care Network (PCN) working, vaccination programmes, or specialised clinical areas such as women's health, chronic disease management, or minor procedures would also be beneficial.
  • Experience using EMIS or other electronic patient record systems in a primary care setting is desirable.
