Practice nurse in Walsall

We are looking for a motivated and compassionate Practice Nurse to join our friendly and supportive team at High Street Surgery in Cheslyn Hay. Our well-established practice includes 2 GP Partners, 1 Advanced Nurse Practitioner, 1 Practice Nurse, 1 Healthcare Assistant, 1 Phlebotomist, and a dedicated administrative team. Main duties of the job

The Practice Nurse will provide high-quality, patient-centred care across a wide range of clinical services. Duties include managing long-term conditions such as diabetes, asthma, and hypertension, carrying out baby and adult immunisations, travel vaccinations, cervical screening (smears), and performing routine swabs and wound care. The role involves conducting patient assessments, delivering evidence-based treatments, and maintaining accurate and contemporaneous clinical records. You will support infection prevention and control measures, ensure stock levels and clinical supplies are maintained, and contribute to the smooth running of the surgery. The post-holder will work collaboratively as part of the multidisciplinary team, participate in audit and quality improvement initiatives, and help develop and maintain safe, efficient, and patient-focused services.

Job responsibilities

• Deliver holistic patient care including chronic disease management (Asthma, COPD, Diabetes) and opportunistic assessments.
• Carry out cervical cytology (smears) and manage Open Exeter returns.
• Perform routine swabs, wound care, sutures and clip removal, venepuncture, and minor illness assessment.
• Administer childhood, adult, catch-up, and travel vaccinations, providing comprehensive travel health advice.
• Conduct contraceptive and health checks, offering lifestyle advice and facilitating behaviour change.
• Support minor procedures and assist with minor surgery.
• Maintain accurate clinical records according to NMC guidance.
• Ensure infection prevention and control, including PPE management, hand hygiene, and sterile environments.
• Monitor and maintain clinical stock and equipment, including refrigeration and emergency equipment.
• Contribute to practice audit, quality improvement, and compliance with QOF standards.
• Participate in training, clinical supervision, and ongoing professional development.

Essential Qualifications

• Registered Nurse with current Nursing and Midwifery Council registration.
• Evidence of ongoing professional development and NMC revalidation compliance.
• Safeguarding Level 3 training (Adults & Children).

Desirable Qualifications

• Postgraduate qualifications in relevant areas such as chronic disease management, minor illness, or sexual/reproductive health.
• Training in immunisation, travel health, or wound management.
• Teaching, mentoring, or supervisory experience.

Essential Experience

• Working as a registered nurse in primary care or comparable healthcare setting.
• Delivering clinical assessments, long-term condition management, vaccinations, and minor procedures.
• Experience in accurate record keeping, clinical governance, and quality improvement.
• Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

Desirable Experience

• Experience in cervical cytology, travel health consultations, minor surgery support, or chronic disease clinics.
• Familiarity with EMIS or other electronic patient record systems.
• Involvement in service development, audit, or clinical education.

Person Specification

Applicants must be a registered nurse with current Nursing and Midwifery Council registration and evidence of ongoing professional development in line with NMC revalidation requirements. They must hold Safeguarding Level 3 training for adults and children and have experience working as a registered nurse in primary care or a comparable clinical setting. Applicants should be competent in chronic disease management, clinical assessments, and delivering patient-centred care. Experience administering vaccinations, performing cervical smears, wound care, and minor procedures is essential. The post-holder must have the ability to maintain accurate clinical records according to NMC guidance, demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills, work effectively within a multidisciplinary team, and have knowledge of infection prevention, control procedures, and health and safety standards. It is desirable for applicants to have additional qualifications or training in areas such as chronic disease management, minor illness, sexual and reproductive health, travel health, or immunisation programmes. Experience in teaching, mentoring, or supervising colleagues or students would be advantageous. Familiarity with Primary Care Networks (PCNs), quality improvement projects, clinical audit, and service development is also desirable. Additional skills in wound management, minor procedures, or the use of electronic patient record systems such as EMIS would be beneficial.

Experience

Applicants must have experience working as a registered nurse in primary care or a comparable clinical setting, delivering high-quality, patient-centred care. They should have experience conducting clinical assessments, managing long-term conditions, and providing care for acute presentations. Experience in administering vaccinations, performing cervical smears, wound care, and minor procedures is essential. The post-holder must be competent in maintaining accurate clinical records, working autonomously and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, and applying infection prevention and control procedures, health and safety standards, and professional guidelines in everyday practice. It is desirable for applicants to have experience in travel health, sexual and reproductive health, wound care, or minor procedures, as well as running chronic disease clinics. Experience with quality improvement, clinical audit, service development, or teaching and mentoring colleagues is also advantageous. Familiarity with Primary Care Networks and using electronic patient record systems such as EMIS in primary care would be beneficial.
