Our client is a well-established drainage and wastewater services company operating across the South West. They play a key role in maintaining essential infrastructure with a large and growing fleet of specialist vehicles, placing a strong emphasis on safety, compliance, and operational excellence. They are looking to appoint a key individual to lead their workshop function.

We are recruiting for an experienced HGV Workshop Manager to take ownership of a sizeable mixed fleet including specialist tankers, alongside a fleet of HGVs and vans. This is a hands-on leadership role where you will have direct line management of an HGV fitter, working closely with them and being responsible for all aspects of fleet maintenance, compliance, and workshop management.

If you are a qualified HGV technician with tanker maintenance experience and the confidence to lead a small team in a busy, compliance-driven environment, this could be the ideal next step in your career.

About the role:
  • Manage and carry out the maintenance and repair of a mixed fleet of specialist vehicles including tankers, HGVs and company vans.
  • Plan and execute all servicing, MOT preparation, inspections, and defect rectification to ensure full DVSA compliance.
  • Lead reactive repairs to minimise vehicle downtime and maintain operation availability.
  • Oversee and manage one HGV Fitter, ensuring consistent standards and workshop performance.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, part usage, and compliance documentation.
  • Liaise daily with the Transport Manager and Operations Manager to prioritise workload based on operational need.
  • Manage parts ordering, stock control, tooling, and workshop housekeeping.
  • Coordinate a rotating shift pattern to ensure full availability during hours of operation.
  • Respond to vehicle breakdowns as required.
  • Assist with LOLER and PAT inspections when required.
  • Ensure full compliance with transport legislation, company policies, and SHEQ requirements.
About You:
  • A recognised qualification in HGV maintenance (NVQ Level 2/3, City & Guilds, or equivalent) or demonstrable time-served experience in a similar role.
  • IRTEC accreditation, this is a firm requirement to lead tanker maintenance confidently.
  • Proven experience working on tanker vehicles, with jetting, vacuum, or similar specialist equipment.
  • Class 2 (C) HGV License with a clean driving record.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in a similar HGV Technician or Workshop Manager role.
  • Strong diagnostic and mechanical skills.
  • Excellent understanding of compliance requirements and record-keeping.
  • Ability to prioritise workload effectively in a fast-paced operational setting.
  • Strong communication skills and collaborative approach.
  • Right to work in the UK.
  • Must be willing to undergo DBS and drug/alcohol screening before commencement of role.
Whats Great About This Role:
  • £50,000 base salary with overtime paid at time and a half.
  • Great opportunity for an experienced Technician to step up into a managerial role.
  • Company van provided for breakdown callouts, no need to use your own vehicle.
  • Rotating shift structure offering variety and work-life balance.
  • A stable, established employer with a strong operational team around you.
  • Training and career development opportunities.

If you are an experienced HGV Technician or Workshop Manager with tanker experience we would love to hear from you.
