I am currently partnered with a leading Syndicate who are seeking a (Senior) Underwriter to join their Energy division.

This role will be Underwriting Upstream, Midstream and Renewable Energy risks on a global basis on Syndicate paper. They have $75m line sizes, and write a mixture of Onshore & Offshore risks.

My client is looking for an established Energy Underwriter, with experience in the above classes from a Syndicate environment & someone with strong broker contacts.

Key Responsibilities

Underwriting & Portfolio Management

  • Underwrite complex global upstream and midstream energy risks in line with underwriting strategy, appetite, guidelines, and individual authority limits.
  • Lead renewal negotiations and develop long-term client and account relationships.
  • Conduct comprehensive risk reviews, including pricing and rate adequacy analysis, exposure assessment, and day-to-day aggregation management.
  • Ensure underwriting decisions, documentation, and administration meet internal standards and relevant market and regulatory requirements.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of underwriting strategy, appetite, portfolio plans, and annual business objectives.
  • Monitor portfolio performance and identify opportunities to improve profitability, diversification, and overall portfolio quality.

Market Engagement

  • Build, maintain, and develop strong relationships with brokers, clients, and other key market stakeholders across the Energy sector.
  • Represent the business at broker meetings, client visits, market events, and industry forums.
  • Support the Head of Energy in developing the team's profile and market reputation across the Lloyd's and London Market.
  • Identify new business opportunities that align with the team's underwriting strategy and risk appetite.

Analytics, Reporting & Research

  • Undertake portfolio analysis, market intelligence, and industry research to support informed and commercially sound underwriting decisions.
  • Produce regular and ad-hoc management information, portfolio analysis, performance reporting, and regulatory submissions as required.
  • Support the preparation and presentation of materials for reinsurance renewals and other portfolio reviews.
  • Work closely with Actuarial, Claims, Loss Modelling, Wordings, and other technical specialists to support a comprehensive approach to portfolio management.
  • Use data and market insight to identify emerging risks, trends, and opportunities within the upstream and midstream Energy sector.

Leadership, Coaching & Collaboration

  • Mentor and support junior underwriters, contributing to their technical and professional development.
  • Share knowledge and best practice across the Energy team and contribute to relevant training initiatives.
  • Lead by example, demonstrating professionalism, integrity, sound judgement, and a commitment to high performance.
  • Promote effective collaboration across underwriting and wider business functions, including Claims, Wordings, Loss Modelling, and Actuarial.
  • Contribute positively to the development of a high-performing and collaborative team culture.
