We are looking for a skilled and committed Communication Support Worker to join a welcoming Supported Learning team in a well-established further education college. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about supporting hearing-impaired learners to fully access education and achieve positive outcomes. You will work closely with learners, teaching staff, and support teams to facilitate effective communication across a range of learning environments, ensuring students are able to engage confidently and independently with their studies.

Key Duties

  • Support hearing-impaired learners in classroom and training environments
  • Facilitate communication using appropriate methods such as BSL, SSE, lip speaking, note-taking, and language modification
  • Work closely with teaching staff to adapt learning materials, environments, and delivery methods
  • Advise staff on effective communication strategies when working with hearing impaired learners
  • Support learners during examinations and assessments in line with awarding body guidelines
  • Assist with learning activities outside the classroom, including trips and visits
  • Transcribe videos and adapt learning materials to meet individual learner needs
  • Support the use of specialist equipment and technical aids such as radio aids and assistive technology
  • Provide voice-over support for hearing impaired learners where appropriate
  • Maintain confidentiality and contribute positively to team working and meetings

Key Skills And Experience Required

  • Experience supporting hearing-impaired learners in an educational or training setting
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to adapt approaches to individual learner needs
  • Knowledge of a range of communication methods, including British Sign Language (or willingness to develop skills)
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff and learners
  • Commitment to equality, inclusion, and safeguarding
  • Willingness to undertake ongoing training and professional development
  • Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. BATOD) is desirable

This role is permanent and term time only. Appointment is subject to satisfactory pre-employment checks, including an Enhanced DBS check, which is renewed in line with safeguarding requirements. We are an equal opportunities employer.
