About the role
We're looking for a UK Managed Services Payroll Team Lead to lead and develop our growing Managed Services payroll team.
This is a key operational leadership role with ownership of a fully remote team of experienced payroll professionals.
You'll be responsible for how the team performs day to day; from coaching and development to service delivery, escalations, operational performance, and customer experience.
But this isn't just about keeping payrolls running.
Our Managed Services function is scaling quickly, and you'll play an important role in shaping how we grow.
Working closely with our Payroll Advisory Lead and operational teams, you'll find smarter ways of working, strengthen team capability, and help us build a payroll service that can scale without compromising on quality or customer experience.
We're looking for someone who combines genuine payroll expertise with great people leadership.
You'll know when to coach, when to challenge, and when to get into the detail yourself.
Requirements
- Significant payroll experience, ideally within a payroll bureau, outsourced payroll, or managed services environment
- Proven people leadership experience, including coaching, development, and performance management
- Strong UK payroll knowledge and the technical credibility to develop experienced payroll professionals
- Experience leading remote or distributed teams
- Experience managing operational performance against KPIs, SLAs, and customer service standards
- Experience working in a fast-paced, scaling operation and improving how teams work as they grow
- Confidence handling complex payroll and customer escalations
- Strong knowledge of payroll governance, controls, and compliance
- A customer-first approach and a natural instinct to find solutions rather than default to "no"
- The confidence to challenge, influence, and make decisions while working collaboratively across teams
- Experience scaling or improving processes within a growing payroll bureau
Requirements are often considered a measure of how equipped you are to do the job, but sometimes they aren't the only factor.
If you don't tick every box but think your experience could translate well, we'd still like to hear from you.
- Nice to have
- HRIS or payroll platform experience
- Operational reporting and performance analysis experience
- Commercial experience within a customer-facing payroll service
