Our Academy and Player Development Department is committed to the provision of an integrated, structured and proactive approach to the management of player development to improve individual and team performance.

  • Primary Objective
  • to develop goalkeepers within the Boys Academy to the standards set by the Academy Director and in accordance with the Academy’s philosophy, ethos and values and technical plan to achieve the defined objectives and outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • To deliver a high standard of goalkeeper coaching to all age groups (pre academy - u19) and educate youth players in the Academy playing style.
  • To plan, organise and implement the goalkeeping curriculum across all academy age groups.
  • To coordinate and monitor the weekly timetable for academy goalkeeping staff
  • To monitor and evaluate weekly goalkeeping sessions whilst continuously reviewing the delivery of goalkeeping coaching staff.
  • To work alongside First Team GK coach, Academy Director, Head of Coaching, U19s Head Coach, Youth Phase & Foundation Phase managers, Physios and S&C Coaches
  • Working alongside the Head of Academy Recruitment, monitor and evaluate each trialist goalkeeper’s performance and assist with transitioning to signing for the club where necessary.
  • Build a strong working relationship with the First Team Goalkeeping Coach and work closely together to implement the style of goalkeeper needed for the first team and to make the transition from u19s to Development/First Team manageable.
  • Attend and coach at all Development (when required) and U19 matches throughout the season, providing pre-, post and half-time feedback.
  • Attend and take control of home game warm-ups
  • Give written and in-person analysis sessions related explicitly to the goalkeepers and their role within the team.
  • Provide regular honest feedback to each goalkeeper and parent where necessary, ensuring expectations are managed appropriately.
  • To ensure that all Academy players adhere to the Players Code of Conduct and show a high level of respect and discipline.
  • To adhere to the Hibernian Football Club staff and coaches' Code of Conduct.
  • Attend courses/CPD events to improve personal knowledge and experience and keep current for qualifications as required.
  • As an Academy Team Member
  • to contribute to the ongoing review and continuous improvement of the Academy objectives, curriculum and technical plan based on assessment of achievement of objectives via training& match play.

This includes the sourcing and proposal for inclusion in an online library of appropriate video examples of drills, techniques etc.

  • to embody and lead by example to staff and players the Academy’s Vision and Philosophy for the development of goalkeepers
  • to work closely with the Recruitment department by facilitating the evaluation of prospects within the agreed evaluation process
  • to work closely with the Sports Science & Medicine and Football Operations Department to ensure that a players technical and physical development and wellbeing are given equal accord in the holistic development of the player
  • to assist other coaches/coaching teams as necessary within other age groups and/or squads where required
  • to participate in the Academy’s Staff Performance Appraisal system including noting the ongoing needs of your CPD
  • to adhere and comply at all times with the obligations placed on the Academy by its participation in the SFA Performance Academy programme
  • to adhere to the Academy’s Code of Conduct for coaches and all other applicable Club policies, including Health & Safety, Child Protection and Social Media, at all times
  • to update all Academy systems i. e. Sports office with the necessary information in accordance with the required timescales
  • to ensure the players are aware of what is expected of them at all times

Qualifications (Essential)

  • UEFA Goalkeeping B Licence
  • Knowledge, Skills & Experience (Essential)
  • Experience working in a role within a professional football club, coaching goalkeepers at the Academy, Development or 1st team level.
  • Highly skilled in communicating.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including adapting to the environment to motivate behavioural change and augment performance.
  • Evidence of recent CPD and a comprehensive CPD portfolio.
  • Technology
  • Having a range of IT skills to a high level of competency.
  • Knowledge of football-specific software is desirable.
