The purpose of this role is to join the global tax team as a VAT Accountant for EMEA. The role will be reporting to the Indirect Tax Senior Manager EMEA. The VAT Accountant will be responsible for reviewing the EMEA VAT ledgers of the group companies and ensuring that these are fully reconciled at each reporting period. The VAT Accountant will also be responsible for reviewing the transactional data within those VAT ledgers and preparing the VAT Returns / Intrastat / EC Sales Lists as required. In this role you will work closely with other members of the business including the General Ledger team on VAT reconciliations, with the Accounts Payable and Treasury team on tax payments. There will also be the opportunity to work with the EMEA Indirect Tax Manager and EMEA Indirect Tax Senior Manager on advisory projects and tax technology projects. This role operates on a blended basis between the local HH Global office, client / vendor site(s) and home as necessary.

Key responsibilities

  • Support the EMEA VAT team with 6 members located in the UK (Basingstoke and remote).
  • Manage and support both the team and external advisors with the preparation of monthly and quarterly VAT returns, to ensure timely and accurate submission of indirect tax returns.
  • Preparing VAT account reconciliations and monitoring the VAT General Ledger balances.
  • Supporting on EMEA VAT audits.
  • Work with the Indirect Tax Manager and Senior Manager to respond to ad-hoc day-to-day queries.
  • Being part of project teams to support the VAT workstreams.
  • Working with the team to document processes and controls and drive forward procedure and risk management improvements.
  • Provide training, support and raise best practice and awareness of VAT requirements across the business.
  • Keep up to date with legislative and case law changes. To anticipate the impact of any changes to the business and to advise on any actions required.

Knowledge, skills + experience

  • Experience within EU VAT, with a sound knowledge of indirect tax rules across the EMEA region.
  • Knowledge of the VAT rules regarding cross border movement of goods would be particularly beneficial.
  • Strong numeracy skills.
  • Strong knowledge of excel and experience with accounting systems and the interaction with other systems. Experience of SAP Business one would be beneficial.
  • Strong communication skills – both internally and externally in order to listen to and understand potentially complex VAT issues and explain those to lay persons, and communicate messages on tax improvements and changes.
  • Experience of dealing with and resolving queries.
  • Strong organisational/time management, people management and team-building skills.
  • Eye for detail.
  • Driven to grow in the role, be proactive and seek improvements and solutions.
