About the Role
We’re looking for a part-qualified or just qualified European Patent Attorney with a mechanical engineering – or an engineering of some type – background to join our team. This role is for someone who’s rolled their sleeves up, metaphorically and literally too. We want someone who’s genuinely curious about how things are built. Ideally, you have at some point taken something apart and (mostly) put it back together again. You’ll be drafting and prosecuting patent applications across a broad range of mechanical and “phygital” technologies, working closely with inventors, engineers, and internal counsel to protect genuinely excellent ideas that make it onto everyday products. Mechanisms, structures, manufacturing processes, tools and machines; if it moves, turns, clicks, or was designed by a problem-solver, you’ll feel right at home.
About You
- Qualification: Part-qualified to qualified UK and/or European Patent Attorney (or well on your way. Trainees who tick the other boxes are very welcome to apply).
- Background: A degree in mechanical engineering is preferred, though we’re genuinely open to other engineering disciplines. What matters most is that you understand – and enjoy understanding – how things work and are used in a practical setting.
- Drafting experience: Solid experience drafting patent applications. More drafts under your belt is generally a good sign, and we’d love to see the range of technologies you’ve covered.
- Curiosity: A real interest in mechanical things: how they’re designed, why they fail, and what makes a clever solution actually clever.
- Hands-on credentials: Bonus points if you’ve renovated a house, restored a car, built furniture, or otherwise spent a weekend covered in sawdust or WD-40.
- Quick learner: Comfortable picking up new technical areas fast, since our clients rarely stick to just one field of engineering.
- Team fit: Someone who takes the work seriously: the law, the deadlines, and the quality of the drafting, without needing to take themselves too seriously while doing it.
What You’ll Be Doing
You’ll be drafting and prosecuting UK and European patent applications, predominantly in mechanical and engineering fields. You’ll be liaising directly with inventors and clients to really understand the invention — sometimes literally getting hands-on with prototypes. You’ll be advising on patentability, infringement, and strategy across a varied and interesting portfolio. Importantly, you will be working alongside a team that takes pride in technical accuracy and clear, well-reasoned drafting, and you’ll be continuing your qualification route, with full support toward UK and/or European Patent Attorney finals if not already qualified.
