I am currently recruiting for a leading Lloyd's Syndicate who are seeking an Underwriting Performance Lead to join their growing team. My client is looking for an experienced Underwriter or someone in a Portfolio Management type role to oversee Underwriting activity/profitability and assist with the Syndicate Business Plans throughout the year. This person will be the lead day-to-day contact for allocated Underwriters across multiple lines of business.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the primary underwriting performance contact for Managing Agents.
- Oversee and assess underwriting profitability through PBO.
- Identify and mitigate underwriting performance issues.
- Support the approval and monitoring of Syndicate Business Plans (SBFs) throughout the planning cycle and mid-year updates.
- Align activities with the Corporation's strategic objectives to ensure sustainable syndicate underwriting performance and profitability.
- Confirm underwriting plans are logical, realistic, and achievable.
- Ensure appropriate portfolio oversight and management by syndicates.
- Serve as the lead day-to-day contact for underwriting matters with assigned Managing Agents.
- Provide independent challenge and regulatory oversight on underwriting issues at the syndicate level.
- Understand and assess the broader strategic ambition of each syndicate.
- Evaluate SBFs to ensure they are logical, realistic, and achievable; prepare them for Capital and Planning Group (CPG) review.
- Monitor ongoing execution of SBFs, assess material changes, recommend action plans, and escalate to Senior Management or CPG as necessary.
- Review syndicate underwriting performance against approved SBFs (for all open years), considering business priorities and strategy.
- Complete internal Quarterly Business Reviews (QBRs) across assigned syndicates, reporting on financial and non-financial positions.
- Review Performance Management Data Return (PMDr) quarterly to assess written premium, risk-adjusted rate change, and price adequacy; address deviations from the plan.
- Conduct PBO assessments under the Underwriting Profitability Principle; provide guidance to improve syndicate standards.
- Review syndicate Own Risk and Solvency Assessments (ORSAs) and provide feedback to Lloyd's Oversight team.
- Report regularly to senior management on syndicate performance, identifying key issues and suggesting actions to address underperformance.
- Document findings and decisions in Dynamics and QBRs.
- Prepare feedback for the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) on syndicate performance and monitoring.
- Collaborate with Account Managers and Market Development to ensure effective engagement with Managing Agents.
- Participate in cross-functional project groups to address evolving market conditions and stakeholder expectations.
