Underwriter - Casualty
City of London - Hybrid
I am currently working with a leading London Market Insurer who are looking to grow their Casualty team. This role will work alongside the Head of Casualty, and wider London Market team, focusing on UK domiciled EL/PL/Products risks, as well as some P&C combined risks too.
Responsibilities
- Support the delivery of the Liability portfolio strategy and business plan in alignment with the company's overall underwriting objectives and appetite.
- Work closely with the Head of Casualty and Underwriting Senior Leadership Team to develop, manage and grow a profitable and sustainable Liability portfolio.
- Underwrite new business and renewals within delegated authority, applying sound technical judgement, underwriting discipline and a clear focus on profitable growth.
- Assess submissions, applications and supporting information, applying appropriate technical expertise to determine the quality and suitability of individual risks.
- Evaluate risk acceptability in line with underwriting guidelines, appetite, authority levels and broader portfolio objectives.
- Determine appropriate pricing, terms, conditions, limits and coverage enhancements through detailed technical analysis, while considering market conditions, competitive positioning and commercial objectives.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and key trading partners to support profitable growth across the UK mid-market and large corporate segments.
- Proactively identify, develop and secure new business opportunities while delivering a high standard of service to established broker relationships.
- Manage broker enquiries and prepare timely, accurate and commercially appropriate quotations, engaging with internal stakeholders and escalating referrals where required.
- Communicate underwriting decisions effectively and professionally, including referral outcomes, risk requirements, terms and declinatures where appropriate.
- Monitor and analyse portfolio quality, profitability, performance and emerging trends, providing meaningful insight, reporting and recommendations to management.
- Contribute to the ongoing development of underwriting appetite, products and portfolio strategy, using market intelligence and technical expertise gained across the mid-market and large corporate sectors.
- Support the promotion of the company's UK’s Liability proposition within the broker market through broker meetings, market visits, networking and other business development activity.
- Represent the company's positively and professionally at industry, broker and corporate events, consistently demonstrating the company’s values and behaviours.
- Partner with the Head of Casualty on complex risks, referrals and strategic initiatives, providing technical and commercial support and deputising when required.
- Ensure all underwriting activity is conducted in accordance with applicable regulatory, legal, governance and compliance requirements, as well as company policies and standards.
- Develop and maintain a strong working knowledge of all relevant company systems, processes and procedures.
- Undertake any other duties and responsibilities reasonably required in support of the business and underwriting function.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Proven experience underwriting commercial Liability business within the UK insurance market.
- Strong technical expertise across Employers’ Liability, Public Liability and Products Liability .
- Experience underwriting and developing profitable mid-market and large corporate Liability portfolios is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of the UK commercial insurance market, including broker dynamics, competitor activity, market conditions and emerging risks.
- Proven ability to develop and maintain productive, long-term broker and trading relationships.
- Demonstrable experience contributing to, implementing and delivering underwriting strategy and portfolio objectives.
- Strong technical underwriting, analytical, commercial and negotiation skills, with the ability to balance risk quality against business opportunity.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to influence and build effective relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to operate autonomously and exercise sound underwriting judgement while working effectively as part of a collaborative underwriting team.
- Strong financial and commercial acumen, combined with a disciplined approach to portfolio management and profitability.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving capability, with the ability to interpret complex information and make well-informed underwriting decisions.
- Good general IT literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint .
- Commitment to ongoing professional and technical development. Candidates should hold or be working towards relevant CII/ACII qualifications and demonstrate a proactive approach to continuous learning, technical development and market engagement.
