Fancy being the engineer schools actually want to see? abtec Managed IT isn't your average MSP. We've been doing this for 30 years, we're a Microsoft Gold Partner, and we work almost entirely in education (schools, colleges, multi-academy trusts) plus private sector clients. Our clients stay with us. Our team stays with us (seriously, some have been here 20+ years). And when you turn up on-site, people are genuinely pleased to see you.

The role: You'll split your time between our Wigan office on the service desk and visiting schools and other clients across the Northwest. One day you're troubleshooting M365 and Azure issues remotely, the next you're on-site implementing changes, sorting out server issues, or scoping technical projects. It's proper varied work:

  • 2nd line support tickets
  • IMACS (installs, moves, changes)
  • Getting stuck into infrastructure projects
  • Working with our ITSM system
  • Creating documentation
  • Gradually becoming the go-to person for more complex stuff

You'll also help mentor newer team members as you grow.

Tech you'll work with: Microsoft 365/Azure (core), Sophos endpoint and firewalls, JAMF/Intune MDM, Ruckus Wireless, VOIP solutions, plus Windows Server and networking fundamentals.

What we're after:

  • At least 3 years in a 2nd line support role
  • Solid hands-on experience with M365, Azure, and Active Directory (non-negotiable)
  • Comfortable with Windows Server, networking, and the usual suspects
  • Experience working to SLAs and in an ITIL/ITSM environment
  • Someone who can handle face-to-face client situations (including the occasional tricky one)
  • Good with people—clients and colleagues alike
  • Takes ownership of problems and sees them through
  • Hungry to learn, willing to document, happy to share knowledge
  • Full UK driving licence (you'll be out and about regularly)

Bonus points for:

  • Education sector experience (schools, colleges, MATs)
  • Microsoft, CompTIA, or Cisco certifications
  • Experience with cyber security or cloud solutions

The best bit about working here: You know that thing where you're stuck on something and everyone's too busy to help? Yeah, that doesn't happen here. We've built a culture where asking questions is encouraged, not seen as a weakness.

What we'll invest in you:

  • Microsoft On-Demand Learning Library - unlimited access
  • All your certifications paid for - exams, courses, the lot
  • Time to actually study - built into your schedule
  • Salary increases - linked to certs you achieve

Plus the good stuff:

  • Private medical (BUPA) - including pre-existing conditions
  • Death in service - 2 x salary
  • Holidays - 21 days + bank holidays + birthday off + 1 extra day per year (up to 25)
  • Free parking - at the office
  • Actual lunch breaks - kitchen to sit in, or go grab food with the team

Salary: £28k-£32k depending on experience

Six months in, you'll be:

  • Handling most Level 2 tickets solo
  • Comfortable with our key client environments
  • Contributing to documentation and knowledge base
  • Working to SLAs confidently
  • Made solid progress on your cert pathway
  • Mentoring newer team members on things you've mastered
  • And most importantly—feeling like you're actually learning, growing, and making a difference.
