If you want to get out of the office and actually get your hands dirty - this one's for you. abtec Managed IT has been doing this for 30 years. We're a Microsoft Gold Partner. We work with schools, colleges, multi-academy trusts, and private sector clients across the Northwest. Our clients stay. Our team stays. Some of the team have been here 20+ years. When you show up on-site, people are genuinely pleased to see you. That's not a happy coincidence - it's how we've built this.
What the job actually looks like
This is not a desk job. Once you're up to speed, you'll be out on client sites up to four days a week across the Northwest. The rest of the time you're on the service desk at our brand new office at Pavilion West, BL5 3AJ - natural light, a fancy coffee machine, and a short hop from the M61.
Day to day:
- 2nd line support tickets - proper ones, not a never-ending Level 1 queue
- IMACs across client sites - installs, moves, changes
- Infrastructure projects you'll actually see through from start to finish
- ITSM system management and keeping documentation sharp
- Mentoring newer team members as you grow into the role
Tech you'll work with:
- Microsoft 365 and Azure (core daily tools)
- Sophos endpoint and firewalls
- JAMF and Intune MDM
- Ruckus Wireless
- VOIP
- Windows Server
- Networking fundamentals
What we're looking for
Essential:
- 2-3 years in a genuine 2nd line support role
- Hands-on M365, Azure, and Active Directory experience - non-negotiable
- An MSP background OR experience as the solo or small-team IT person in a busy company - if you've had to handle everything yourself and make the calls, you'll fit right in here
- Comfortable in a field environment - clients asking questions on the spot, working across different sites, adapting quickly
- Full UK driving licence - you'll be out on-site regularly
- Windows Server, networking, and standard infrastructure experience
- Someone who takes ownership of problems and sees them through
Nice to have:
- Education sector experience (schools, colleges, or multi-academy trusts)
- Microsoft, CompTIA, or Cisco certifications
- Cyber security or cloud project experience
What you get in return
- £28,000 - £30,000 depending on experience
- Private medical insurance (BUPA) - including pre-existing conditions, with option to add family
- Death in service - 12 months salary
- 21 days holiday + bank holidays + birthday off + 1 extra day per year of service (up to 25)
- All certifications paid for - exams, courses, prep materials
- Microsoft On-Demand Learning Library - unlimited access
- Dedicated study time built into your schedule - not squeezed into evenings
- Salary increases linked to certifications you achieve
- Free parking at the new office
The culture bit - and it matters
You know that thing where you're stuck on something and everyone's too busy to help? Doesn't happen here. Asking questions is encouraged - it's how the team works. People stay because they want to. Some have been here 20+ years. That tells you something.
Six months in, you'll be:
- Handling most Level 2 tickets solo
- Confident on client sites
- Contributing to the knowledge base
- Working to SLAs without a second thought
- Making progress on your certs
- Mentoring newer team members
- And feeling like you're actually growing
