About HTS: Heyne Tillett Steel is an equal opportunities employer and is committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive workforce.

About The Role: Applications are now open for 2027 Summer placements! Heyne Tillett Steel is inviting applications from ambitious Structural Engineering undergraduates for our 2027 Summer Placement Programme. This is an opportunity to gain genuine industry experience at a leading engineering practice, working on live projects for a minimum of 8 weeks.

The Opportunity: Placement students will be embedded within one of our Director-led teams, contributing to a diverse portfolio of projects that spans smaller-scale refurbishments through to large-scale new builds. This breadth of exposure ensures a well-rounded understanding of structural engineering practice across different project types and complexities. Site visits form an integral part of the placement, providing invaluable insight into how design decisions are realised in the built environment and reinforcing the connection between theoretical design and practical construction.

Preparing for Your Placement: To maximise the value of your time with us, we recommend candidates arrive with:

  • A working knowledge of basic design calculations, carried out by hand and in accordance with Eurocode standards
  • An understanding of designing beams and columns in both steel and concrete, which will provide a strong foundation for the placement

Software and Technical Development: Placement students will have the opportunity to develop proficiency across a range of industry-standard software, including:

  • Tedds for individual member calculations
  • Robot, SCIA, Tekla and GSA for advanced structural analysis and design

This exposure ensures placement students leave with practical, transferable skills relevant to professional structural engineering practice.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Civil or Structural Engineering undergraduate degree
  • Strong academic performance, particularly in structural analysis, mechanics of materials, and design modules
  • On track for a 2:1 or above
  • Genuine passion for the built environment and engineering design
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical thinking
  • Curiosity about how buildings/infrastructure are conceived and constructed
  • Professional attitude and reliability
  • Enthusiasm for exposure to varied project scales (refurbishments to large new-builds)
