Business Partner - Commercial Contracts & Procurement to join the Professional Services team of a leading higher education group based in Newcastle.
This is a varied and influential role that combines commercial contracts, legal support and procurement expertise.
Reporting to the Director of Legal and Contracts, the new Business Partner - Commercial Contracts and Procurement will work closely with stakeholders across the organisation, providing specialist advice on contractual and procurement matters, leading procurement exercises, supporting contract negotiations and helping ensure compliance with relevant legislation and organisational requirements.
You will act as a trusted advisor, balancing legal and commercial risk with operational needs, while delivering practical solutions that support the group's strategic priorities.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal support to the Legal & Contracts and Procurement teams by drafting correspondence, preparing case files and progressing agreed actions, so legal and procurement activity is delivered efficiently and to required standards.
- Lead on the review and drafting of expenditure associated contracts, for internal clients, applying appropriate contract law principles and using approved templates (where applicable), by mitigating risk to protect the group's assets and support its charitable objectives.
- Lead, when required, on the review and drafting any other relevant commercial agreements for internal clients, applying appropriate contract law principles and using approved templates (where applicable), by mitigating risk to protect the group's assets and support its charitable objectives.
- Plan and deliver procurement exercises for goods, services and works, using approved processes and tools.
- Undertake market engagement activities to inform procurement strategies and promote innovation.
- Develop procurement strategies for key capital and revenue projects, agreeing approach, route to market and evaluation methodology with stakeholders, to align purchasing decisions with organisational priorities, and lead or support on the procurement delivery.
- Apply commercial acumen to drive value for money, considering whole-life costs, quality and service outcomes.
- Lead or support commercial negotiations to secure optimal contractual terms.
Experience
- Professional qualification in law, procurement or a related discipline.
- Membership of CIPS, Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEX), Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) or equivalent professional body.
- Significant experience in commercial contracts, procurement, or a related commercial role.
- Experience drafting, reviewing and negotiating commercial agreements.
- Knowledge of public sector procurement legislation and best practice.
- Experience providing advice and guidance to a wide range of stakeholders.
- Strong analytical, organisational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and influencing skills.
- Experience working in or closely with the education, public sector or not-for-profit environment.
