Hex Energy is seeking a capable and motivated Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) Design Engineer to join our growing team. The role will involve the design and delivery of both commercial and domestic GSHP systems, ranging from small-scale installations through to large projects of up to multiple MW capacity.
Working alongside one of the UK’s leading GSHP designers, this is an excellent opportunity for an engineer looking to further develop their expertise in a specialist and rapidly growing sector.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake ground source feasibility assessments, including review of site constraints and geology
- Assess geological conditions and interpret available borehole and site investigation data
- Produce detailed ground loop designs (vertical boreholes and horizontal arrays)
- Use specialist software (e.g. GLD/Loop / Pipe Builder / equivalent) to develop and optimise ground array designs
- Complete full plantroom and system designs, including:
- Heat pump sizing and selection
- Hydraulic schematics
- Buffer vessels, distribution systems, and controls
- Generate and maintain CAD drawings for GSHP systems and plantroom layouts
- Update and maintain internal design tools, templates, and software systems
- Provide technical input into tenders, proposals, and project delivery
- Support installation teams with design clarification and technical guidance
- Work across both commercial and domestic projects
- Assist with ongoing design innovation and continuous improvement
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Proven experience in ground source heat pump design
- Strong understanding of GSHP systems, including ground arrays and building-side integration
- Experience designing systems across domestic and commercial applications
- Knowledge of systems up to large-scale (circa 1MW)
- Competence using CAD software (AutoCAD or similar)
- Ability to assess and interpret ground conditions and geological data
- Experience using design tools such as Loop, Pipe Builder, or similar GSHP software
- Strong technical and problem-solving skills
- Good communication skills and ability to work collaboratively
Desirable:
- Geoexchange / GSHP design qualification (or similar)
- Experience with heat networks / district heating systems
- Experience working on low carbon energy or renewable projects at scale
- Understanding of UK standards, regulations, and best practice in GSHP design
Note: Training and support will be provided to achieve relevant qualifications where required.
