An engineering and manufacturing / assembly business is seeking a Workshop Manager to take full operational ownership of its workshop and manufacturing output. The organisation designs and manufactures technically complex products for UK and international customers and operates in a quality-driven, engineering-led environment.
This is a hands-on, visible leadership role, responsible for people, production planning, quality, and full Health & Safety accountability within the workshop. You will be on the floor daily, leading from the front, solving problems, and ensuring products are built, tested, and delivered on time and to specification.
This role is ideal for a practical manufacturing leader who enjoys balancing hands-on involvement with planning, coordination and team leadership. You will require a sound technical understanding of mechanical assembly, wiring and system testing.
Key Responsibilities- Plan, schedule and manage assembly, build, test and repair activities to agreed deadlines
- Own and maintain the production schedule using an ERP/MRP system
- Allocate work effectively based on skills, capacity and priority
- Maintain a strong on-the-floor presence, identifying issues early and implementing permanent solutions
- Ensure tools, equipment and consumables are available, organised and fit for purpose
- Ensure all products meet defined quality standards and customer requirements
- Maintain and improve manufacturing procedures and documentation
- Work closely with Engineering to manage product changes and build readiness
- Coordinate with Quality to ensure testing and buy-off activities are correctly planned and resourced
- Take full responsibility for Health & Safety within the workshop
- Ensure a safe, tidy, compliant and well-maintained working environment
- Conduct risk assessments, inspections and safety audits
- Ensure staff are trained and working safely
- Investigate incidents and near misses, implementing corrective and preventative actions
- Act as the primary point of contact for workshop H&S matters
- Lead, coach, train and mentor workshop staff
- Set clear expectations around quality, safety and output
- Manage performance, conduct reviews and address issues when required
- Foster a positive, professional and accountable workshop culture
- Proven, hands-on manufacturing / workshop leadership experience
- Sound technical understanding of mechanical assembly, wiring and system testing
- Excellent planning, scheduling and organisational skills
- Confident user of ERP / MRP systems (Epicor desirable)
- Demonstrable Health & Safety competence in a manufacturing environment
- Strong problem-solving and fault-finding skills
- Clear, confident communicator able to manage multiple stakeholders
- Calm, practical and decisive under pressure
