We are seeking an experienced and highly organised Bookkeeper / Financial Controller to take ownership of the day‑to‑day finance function. This is a varied role requiring a hands‑on individual with strong bookkeeping expertise and proven experience using Sage Line 50.
The Bookkeeper Role
Reporting directly to the Directors, you will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records across both businesses, managing supplier and customer accounts, monitoring cash flow, and providing financial information to support business decisions. The role offers flexibility in working hours and is expected to require between 12 and 20 hours per week.
The Bookkeeper Responsibilities
- Manage day‑to‑day bookkeeping activities, including bank accounts, foreign currency transactions, payments, receipts, and account reconciliations.
- Process supplier invoices, maintain purchase ledger records, and prepare creditor reports and payment schedules.
- Manage purchase orders, stock records, goods received transactions, and inventory updates within Sage.
- Process sales invoices, customer statements, credit notes, and maintain accurate sales ledger records.
- Carry out credit control activities, including chasing overdue payments and resolving account queries.
- Prepare quarterly VAT returns, process import VAT transactions, and ensure compliance with financial regulations.
- Produce financial reports, cash flow information, and other management information to support business decision‑making.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Proven experience in a bookkeeping or financial controller position
- Strong working knowledge of Sage Line 50 (essential)
- Experience processing foreign currency transactions
- Solid understanding of VAT, including import VAT accounting
- Experience managing sales and purchase ledgers
- Strong reconciliation and reporting skills
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to work independently and manage priorities effectively
- Strong communication and organisational skills
Desirable
- Experience working within importing, distribution, wholesale, or stock‑based businesses
- AAT qualification or equivalent bookkeeping/accounting qualification
- Experience supporting owner‑managed or SME businesses
