The Company
Our client is a well-established, family‑owned engineering and manufacturing business based in Hereford. Due to this growth, they are seeking an electronics‑focused Production Engineer to join their collaborative engineering and manufacturing team.
The Role
This is a hands‑on and varied role supporting the test and final assembly of electronic products. You will play a key part in maintaining production test capability, improving manufacturing processes, and ensuring product quality through robust testing and continuous improvement initiatives. You will also be involved in investigating production and field issues, supporting new product introduction, and helping drive efficiency across the production environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Production Test Engineering
- Specify, commission and maintain automated production test equipment
- Define test requirements for new products in collaboration with R&D teams
- Design and build test fixtures, jigs and associated equipment
- Maintain production test software and associated databases
- Ensure test processes provide reliable verification of product performance
- Manage calibration and traceability of test equipment
- Manufacturing Process Engineering
- Analyse and improve production processes, workflows and layouts
- Create and maintain clear build and test documentation
- Develop rework and repair procedures
- Support new product introduction and process validation
- Failure Analysis & Quality
- Investigate production failures and conduct root cause analysis (PCBA and product level)
- Implement corrective and preventative actions alongside Operations and Quality teams
- Ensure compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements
- Continuous Improvement
- Lead process improvement initiatives using Lean methodologies
- Identify opportunities for automation and improved tooling
- Apply structured problem‑solving techniques (e.g. Kaizen, A3, Poka‑Yoke)
- Equipment & Projects
- Support specification and procurement of production equipment
- Assist with supplier evaluation and CapEx projects
- Commission and validate new equipment within production
The Person
- HNC/HND (or equivalent) in Electronics Engineering or related discipline
- Experience supporting or maintaining automated production test equipment
- Ability to read and interpret electronic schematics and PCB layouts
- Strong fault‑finding and root cause analysis experience
- Hands‑on experience with soldering and electronic test equipment (e.g. multimeters, oscilloscopes)
- Strong documentation and reporting skills
- Experience working with production databases or systems
Desirable:
- Knowledge of Lean / Continuous Improvement tools (FMEA, Kaizen, A3, Poka‑Yoke)
- Experience with CAD (ECAD/MCAD)
- Programming experience (Python, C, C++, VB or similar)
- Experience introducing automation into production
