Hetton Group Practice has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic Health Care Assistant who has experience of working in the NHS to join our extensive friendly practice team. We are seeking a team player with a flexible and committed attitude to work. The HCA will assist in delivering treatment, preventative care, patient education and health promotion.

Main duties of the job

Working under direct supervision of the Lead nurse and GPs and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the healthcare assistant will assist the practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of prescribed programmes of clinical care. Duties are varied including phlebotomy, ECGs, injections (B12/Flus etc), blood pressure check (including 24/48/72hrs monitoring), labelling of samples to name a few.

About us

Hetton Group Practice is a forward thinking and innovative practice based in Hetton le Hole. We are looking for someone who has experience, preferably in a GP practice setting. We are a single site practice with approx. 11,900 patients. The partnership consists of six GPs who are supported by two salaried GPs, two Practice Nurses, three HCAs and a brilliant administration team. Hetton Group Practice is a training practice for GP Registrars and also takes medical students from both Sunderland and Newcastle university. The practice clinical system is Emis Web.

Job responsibilities

  • Working under direct supervision of the Lead nurse and GPs and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols.
  • Assisting the practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of prescribed programmes of clinical care.
  • Nursing duties including new patient health checks, chronic disease observation monitoring, BP monitoring, urinalysis/pregnancy testing, ear syringing, NHS Healthchecks, administering vaccinations under PSD, assisting with childhood and adolescent immunisations, providing lifestyle advice, weight monitoring, ensuring specimens are labelled and bagged, restocking/maintenance of equipment, assisting in minor surgery and sexual health clinics, ECG recording, and vaccine/cold chain storage.
  • Participating in the administrative and professional responsibilities of the Practice team, ensuring accurate recording of consultations and treatments, maintaining the clinical computer system, completing necessary documentation, collecting and maintaining statistical information, attending Practice meetings, assisting in formulation of Practice philosophy, strategy and policy, and participating in seasonal and special projects.

Person Specification

  • Experience of working in primary care with good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise workload.
  • Experience of using computers with good keyboard skills.
  • Healthcare qualification and experience.
  • General education to GCSE level or equivalent.
  • Care certificate or willing to work towards NVQ level 3 in care.
