Salary Range: Β£28,265 per annum (Trainee) rising to Β£37,675 per annum (Competent)

Hours: 37 per week

The role of a Firefighter is not only about fighting fires; it ranges from informing people on a wide number of safety issues to responding to road traffic collisions and medical emergencies to name a few.

All applicants must:

  • Reside in Hertfordshire or in a directly adjoining postcode area as listed on the Postcode Eligibility Page
  • Be 18 years old or over at the time you start the training course
  • Hold a full & valid manual driving licence, enabling 'unsupervised' driving in the United Kingdom
  • Have the right to work in the United Kingdom
  • Have no unspent convictions (As defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974)
  • Have GCSE Grade A* to C, or Level 9-4 qualifications in English and Mathematics (or a recognised equivalent i.e. Functional Skills Level 2).

If you are successful as part of your development, you will complete either a Level 3 Operational Firefighter Apprenticeship or Level 3 Diploma in Emergency Fire and Rescue Service Operations in the Community.

Please note you can apply at any time throughout the year; however, shortlisting will be completed based on the selection assessment dates given below.

  • Stage 1 Physical Stage: dates from 29th April to 10th May
  • Interview: w/c 2nd June
  • Medical: dates through July 2025
  • Start date - September 2025

As part of this role, you will be required to travel to other HCC Sites/Residences either using your own mode of transport or a company car. In light of this, the ability to drive and/or travel around the County is required for this role a DVLA check will be required on appointment.

English Fluency: The ability to converse at ease with members of the public and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for the post.
