Driver – Passenger Transport/Dial a Ride. Starting salary £13.06 per hour progressing to £13.26. Hours: 37 per week. Location: various locations in Hertfordshire. Contract type: Permanent/Variable. Directorate: Growth & Environment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Collecting passengers safely from their homes and transporting them to day centres or community locations with professionalism and care.
  • Assisting passengers with mobility, boarding, and use of ramps or lifts.
  • Monitoring passenger wellbeing and communicating concerns.
  • Completing essential vehicle safety checks to keep the vehicle clean, safe, and road‑ready.
  • Returning passengers home at the end of each journey with the same level of care.
  • Driving accessible minibus vehicles and following scheduled routes while maintaining safety and professionalism.
  • Providing a friendly, reliable door‑to‑door transport service for elderly and disabled residents.
  • Recording and reporting vehicle defects, collecting and depositing passenger fares, and keeping accurate journey records.
  • Promptly reporting incidents or hazards to the duty manager.

Essential Criteria:

  • Full, unrestricted D1 driving licence and experience driving both manual and automatic vehicles.
  • Experience or strong ability to work with vulnerable adults and people with disabilities, including mobility or health needs.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to liaise with service users and professionals.
  • Reliable, punctual, able to work independently and follow scheduled routes.
  • Awareness of safeguarding and duty of care, able to observe, respond to, and report concerns about passenger wellbeing.
  • Ability to carry out daily vehicle safety checks, maintain cleanliness, safety equipment, and report defects.
  • Basic cash‑handling skills for taking payments and recording transactions.
  • Physically fit to assist passengers safely, including supporting mobility and handling equipment.
  • Confidence as a safe driver with an empathetic and professional approach.
  • Willingness to undertake mandatory training, including moving & handling, disability awareness, safeguarding, and first aid.
  • Driving assessment required.

Additional Information:

  • Disability Confident: This role guarantees an interview to anyone disclosing a disability whose application meets the minimum criteria for the post.
  • Safeguarding: The post requires a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check.
  • Driving Required: You must be able to drive and travel within Hertfordshire, either by your own vehicle or a company car.
  • English Fluency: You must be able to converse in accurate spoken English with the public. Where a signed language is used, a sign language interpreter who speaks English must be provided.
