Duties of the post include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervise and review inspection reports, site records, and associated documentation completed by colleagues.
  • Ensure inspections and reports are completed in accordance with current Building Regulations, Building Safety legislation, professional standards, and organisational procedures.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and support to colleagues where required.
  • Monitor the quality, consistency, and timeliness of inspection records and reporting.
  • Identify areas of non-compliance, risk, or technical concern and provide recommendations for corrective action.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives within the Building Control service.
  • Examine and assess submitted plans, specifications, calculations, and supporting information for compliance with Building Regulations and associated legislation.
  • Carry out plan checks on a variety of building projects including domestic, commercial, and complex developments, appropriate to registration class and competency.
  • Issue clear and accurate plan check reports, consultation responses, and compliance advice.
  • Liaise with applicants, architects, surveyors, contractors, and other stakeholders to resolve technical issues and secure compliance.
  • Assess plans submitted for Building Regulation approval.
  • Support undergraduate Registered Building Inspectors on more complex technical matters.
  • Undertake forensic investigations as necessary.
  • Attend and meaningfully engage in team meetings.
  • Provide technical contributions at team meetings, promoting personal and colleagues’ professional development.
  • Complete other duties as agreed and assigned by the Line Manager.

PERSON SPECIFICATION:

  • Registered Building Inspector (minimum Class 2F)
  • Building Control plan checking experience
  • Full knowledge of Key Legislation is essential i.e Approved Documents, The Building Regulations 2010 (England and Wales) and The Building Act 1984
  • Full Member of RICS, CIOB or CABE (or working towards membership)
  • Experience in working with a range of IT products (e.g. MS Office applications, Intermediate/advanced Outlook, Spreadsheets, databases etc.), document management systems and dataspace
  • Strong communication skills with an approachable nature
  • Ability to work in an organised manner, with the ability to manage multiple projects with parallel deadlines.
  • Competent in Commercial Plan Checking is preferred
  • Knowledge of the RICS Plan of works, including the design and construction stages, would be desirable.
  • Knowledge of Key Legislation is essential i.e. British Standards BS9991 & BS9999.
  • Up to £65,000 DOE
  • 25 days per annum (increasing by one day per year after a year, up to a maximum of 30 days) plus bank holidays
