Herstmonceux Castle Estate brings together a historic castle, an international academic campus and 600 acres of gardens, woodland and lakes in East Sussex. Alongside the academic life of Bader College, the estate delivers a diverse and evolving programme of commercial and public events, including weddings, conferences, corporate hire, exhibitions, filming and community engagement.

Following significant restoration and continued investment, the estate is entering a new phase of purposeful growth and outward focus, with events playing an increasingly visible role in strengthening relationships with schools, community groups, corporate organisations and regional partners. We are therefore establishing a newly created Events Manager role to build, shape and professionalise the estate’s events function at a defining stage in its development.

This role will suit an experienced Events Manager who is commercially aware, creative in approach and community-focused — someone able to recognise the opportunity within this setting and translate vision into structured growth and confident delivery.

The Role

Reporting to the Commercial Director, the Events Manager will lead the development, delivery and expansion of a diverse commercial and public events portfolio. This is a hands-on role within the Estate, with responsibility for overseeing events from planning through to live delivery. The role combines operational delivery with strategic development and clear commercial accountability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading the growth and diversification of the estate’s commercial and public events portfolio
  • Driving commercial performance by proactively identifying, developing and securing new opportunities and partnerships
  • Taking full accountability for budgeting, pricing strategy, forecasting and financial monitoring
  • Establishing and embedding robust enquiry management processes, reporting structures and commercial oversight
  • Introducing and optimising appropriate CRM or event management systems to strengthen pipeline visibility and performance tracking
  • Representing the estate confidently within regional and industry networks
  • Delivering exceptional customer service as the first point of contact for wedding and event enquiries, handling leads with warmth, professionalism and attention to detail
  • Shaping and professionalising the events function by embedding consistent standards, processes and performance metrics
  • Working collaboratively with the Marketing lead to align event development with promotional activity
  • Supervising, mentoring and developing a member of the events team
  • Reviewing commercial performance, client feedback and market positioning to inform sustainable growth and continuous improvement

Events take place within a working academic and heritage environment. The successful candidate will balance commercial ambition with sound judgement, ensuring that growth and partnership development align with the estate’s wider institutional objectives.

Essential Criteria

  • Proven experience managing and delivering a diverse portfolio of commercial events (not solely weddings)
  • Experience holding budget responsibility and driving commercial performance
  • Experience supervising and developing team members
  • Strong organisational and operational capability within a venue, hospitality or heritage environment
  • The ability to work on-site in East Sussex
  • Experience implementing or improving CRM or event management systems would be advantageous.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary (subject to experience)
  • 6.6 weeks’ annual leave (including bank holidays)
  • Additional paid leave during the Christmas closure
  • Enhanced employer pension contribution
  • Access to private healthcare
  • Death-in-service benefit
  • A distinctive working environment set within a historic castle estate in East Sussex
