If you’re an experienced General Manager who can thrive within the seasonal changes of a landmark coastal pub, this is a rare opportunity that could be the one you’re waiting for! The Duke of York sits right at the foot of Whitby’s famous 199 steps and looks out over the harbour, surrounded by cobbled streets, jet jewellers and independent shops that keep footfall flowing year-round. Inside, the pub oozes character, and in peak season the two bars really hum, especially the quayside bar with picturesque sea views.

Alongside the pub, you’ll look after eight en suite rooms, many with harbour or Abbey views. Hotel background isn’t essential as we will ensure that you receive the training and coaching to deliver success; what matters is your appetite to run both sides of the business with confidence. The atmosphere at the Duke of York is lively and welcoming, backed by proper pub classics that the Heritage menu is famed for as well as a strong drinks range, Sky Sports, quiz nights and regular live music that keep locals and visitors coming back.

This is a flagship, high profile, seasonal business, where summer sales soar while winter months are challenging at times, so you’ll need to be commercially sharp, have a cool head during peak trading times, and maintain the kind of standards that stand out in a competitive town. You’ll lead and support a proud, capable team, keep operations tight across bar and rooms, and build loyalty with locals while making sure every guest leaves wanting to return.

If you can create and maintain reasons to visit, spot the wins in the rhythm of the week, and keep a busy coastal pub running beautifully when the harbour’s buzzing, the Duke of York can be a genuine career defining move.

Please Note: To be eligible to apply, you MUST hold a valid Personal Licence.
