About Our Team: Our group has led pioneering research in single‑photon technologies, including the first underwater 3D imaging with quantum detection (2015), the first CMOS SPAD detector array for underwater imaging (2019), real‑time free‑space and underwater imaging (2022), and a fully submersible transceiver system (2023). We operate within the EPSRC QuSIT, QEPNT, and IQN hubs and collaborate with local and international partners.

Detailed Description: The post holder (PDRA) will investigate aspects of single‑photon detector arrays for imaging applications, developing passive and active techniques to enable sensor fusion in extreme low‑light conditions. The initial contract is 12 months, with strong prospects for renewal.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, execute, and analyze experiments, modelling, and data analysis aligned with project goals.
  • Write research reports and publications, and develop original research ideas.
  • Prepare grant and funding proposals and identify funding opportunities.
  • Support student research skills, including assessment of PhD student work and teaching of specialized courses.
  • Collaboratively design research objectives and disseminate results via peer‑reviewed journals and conferences.
  • Maintain written records of progress, IP, and data analysis.
  • Build internal and external networks to foster collaboration and secure resources.
  • Provide guidance to staff and students as needed.
  • Contribute to project planning and proposal development.
  • Bring a creative, highly motivated, research‑focused mindset to the team.
  • Apply strong theoretical knowledge of semiconductor optoelectronics and related fields.
  • Communicate effectively through written and oral presentations.
  • Oversee the day‑to‑day maintenance of experimental facilities and liaise with industry partners.
  • Participate in outreach activities, including public talks and demonstrations.

Essential Criteria

  • PhD in Physics or a relevant area of electrical engineering, with a first‑draft thesis submitted by the start date.
  • Strong theoretical understanding and hands‑on experimental experience in imaging and single‑photon techniques.
  • Proficiency in scientific writing and oral communication.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within the university and with external partners.
  • Experience with single‑photon avalanche diode (SPAD) detector arrays.
  • Knowledge of free‑space optics, optical instrumentation, and practical optical design.
  • Programming skills for data acquisition (MATLAB, Python, C/C++), data analysis, and equipment interfacing.
  • Initiative, self‑direction, and a strong track record of peer‑reviewed publications.
  • Hands‑on experimental skills and a high level of enthusiasm for the project.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience with imaging systems.
  • Experience in stereo vision and photogrammetry.
  • Industry collaboration or experience.
  • Research‑student supervision experience.
  • Experience with CAD software.
