Grade and Salary: Grade 7 - £37,694 - £47,389 per annum

Contract Type and Holiday Entitlement: Full Time (1 FTE), Open ended. 33 days annual leave, plus 9 building closed days for all full‑time staff.

Purpose of the Role: We are looking for an assistant professor in theoretical computer science for our Edinburgh campus of Heriot‑Watt University. This role expects 40% time on teaching, 40% on research, and 20% on administrative/leadership duties. Within teaching you will cover courses in programming, logic, algorithms, theoretical computer science; teaching in databases is welcome but not required.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Engage in high‑quality research in your area of expertise and in collaborative research aligned with the School and University strategy.
  • Write and submit grant proposals and secure research funding, initially as Co‑Investigator and then as Principal Investigator. Manage and execute research projects involving academic and industrial collaborators.
  • Disseminate research findings through top‑level conferences and journals and maintain an international research reputation; serve as reviewer, referee, expert witness, conference chair, programme committee member, or journal editor.
  • Participate in the supervision and guidance of undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers.
  • Teach undergraduate, masters and doctoral level courses.

Essential Criteria:

  • Doctorate (PhD) in computer science or a closely related field.
  • Track record of high‑quality publications in theoretical computer science.
  • Enthusiasm and ambition to contribute to a world‑class academic community, including attracting external funding.
  • Evidence of excellent teaching ability across a wide range of computer science topics.
  • Good interpersonal and teamwork skills.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Credible plans for the active pursuit of external funding.
  • Skills to supervise undergraduate and MSc projects.
  • Track record of teaching computer science courses well and enthusiastically.
