The Department of Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics wishes to appoint a fixed-term Assistant Professor to cover the learning and teaching commitments for 12 months. This new Teaching and Scholarship (T&S) staff member will be expected to add to the successful T&S team already active in MACS, and to take on the responsibility of delivery, assessment and development of courses in actuarial mathematics.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality teaching in actuarial mathematics at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
- Work successfully in global teaching teams while remaining physically located in Edinburgh, UK.
- Carry out such administrative and recruitment activities as may be required to achieve these aims.
- Provide pastoral support to students.
- Be responsible to the Head of Department for performing the activities listed above at a standard that will maintain and enhance the schoolβs reputation for excellence.
Essential & Desirable Criteria
The candidate must be a Fellow or Associate of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) or hold an equivalent professional designation from another actuarial professional body. The candidate must also have several years of professional actuarial experience and an interest in teaching and teaching innovation.

- Experience of teaching actuarial courses at university-level.
- Competent in the use of Excel.
- Excellent interpersonal, influencing and presentation skills, able to understand and communicate complex issues effectively.
- Ability to research, analyse and present complex information effectively with good attention to detail.
- Demonstrable professional and proactive approach.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Desirable
- Potential to provide leadership in the planning, organisation and development of learning and teaching activities in the Department.
