Senior Consultant Product Manager in Sheffield

Senior Consultant Product Manager in Sheffield

Sheffield Full-Time On-site
H

Who is this great for?

Our Senior Consultant Product Managers help teams make good decisions in ambiguous conditions. We're looking for experienced product people who can help clients focus on the opportunities that matter most and deliver outcomes that change things for users and the organisation, without hiding behind frameworks or consultancy theatre. You'll bring strong product judgement, commercial awareness, adaptability, and a people-first approach that aligns with Herd's "non-consultancy vibes".

We hire experienced adults and trust people to get the job done. As a growing scale-up, you'll be trusted with responsibility early and expected to get stuck in where needed.

As a Senior Consultant Product Manager you’ll be:

  • A decision-maker in ambiguity: you assess what's in front of you, work out what matters, and make calls that move things forward, even without all the information.
  • Outcomes-obsessed: success is what changes for users and the organisation, not what gets shipped or how many story points get closed.
  • Experienced in government delivery: you've worked in central or local government, or within the NHS, and understand the constraints, stakeholders and pace, and how to get things done anyway.
  • Pragmatic, not dogmatic: you know frameworks and best practice but aren't constrained by them, and you adapt your approach to the context.
  • Credible across disciplines: you hold your own with delivery, design, technology, business analysis and leadership, and work across professional silos.
  • A relationship builder who creates trust with clients and teams, helping build Herd's brand as a trusted partner whilst embracing "non-consultancy vibes".
  • Commercially aware and able to deliver value for money for clients in line with our company values.
  • A team player who embraces the "Power of Herd", sharing knowledge and expertise and knowing when to pull others in.
  • Committed to continuous learning, proactively seeking ways to improve your knowledge, toolkit, and refine your craft.

How we practise product management at Herd (and how we interview)

We don't believe there's one "true" version of product management. We believe there's a mindset needed for good product management, but in real organisations product managers need to operate in different modes depending on the problem in front of them. This role expects you to recognise those modes and move between them.

If you're shortlisted, we'll send you a copy of How we practise product management at Herd so you can check it aligns with your approach. We use it to shape the interview, and will ask you for a real example of how you've worked in each mode:
  • Engineering-centred product management
  • Value-stream product management
  • Opportunity and vision-led product management
  • Transformational product management

Core skills and characteristics

  • Able to show evidence of owning outcomes, making product decisions, prioritising based on value, and delivering iteratively.
  • Comfortable making calls with incomplete information, and explaining the reasoning behind them.
  • Able to frame problems clearly and keep teams focused on the right one.
  • Build strong working relationships with people at all levels, across teams, functions, and cultures, and influence without authority.
  • Able to synthesise complex information and communicate it in a simple, clear, and effective way.
  • Data literate: comfortable working with evidence and using it to inform decisions.
  • A self-starter who can identify priorities, make decisions, and work independently when needed.
  • Comfortable working within multidisciplinary teams alongside delivery, design, user research, engineering, business analysis, policy, and operational colleagues.
  • Comfortable presenting and defending your thinking, whilst remaining open-minded to better ideas and alternative perspectives.
  • Comfortable constructively challenging customers and colleagues when there may be a better way of doing things, balancing confidence with empathy and professionalism.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.

Essential experience

  • Demonstrable product management skills, whether or not you've had "Product Manager" in your job title. What matters is showing the skills: making calls when the path isn't clear, balancing user needs with organisational constraints, and delivering real value in messy, real-world environments.
  • Central or local government delivery, with an understanding of the context, constraints, and how to be effective within them.
  • First-hand experience working to the GOV.UK Service Standard, applying service design and digital delivery principles in practice.

Desirable experience

  • Familiarity with techniques like Opportunity Solution Trees, outcome-based roadmapping, or continuous discovery.
  • Track record of delivering product thinking across multiple organisations.
