Head of Humanities in Tewkesbury

The Head of Humanities will show enthusiasm and have the experience of leading initiatives within the department and deliver an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum for students and to support designated curriculum areas as appropriate.

The successful candidate will:

• Contribute to the well-being and development of the school including the supervision of students and the guidance of teachers
• Be passionate about their subject area

• Monitor and support the overall progress and development of students as a Teacher/Tutor
• Facilitate and encourage a learning experience which provides students with the opportunity to achieve their individual potential
• Contribute to raising standards of student attainment
• Share and support the school's responsibility to provide and monitor opportunities for personal and academic growth
• Present regularly to SLT on their findings and next steps for their remit

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

• Act as a role model and an outstanding Head of Department
• Lead on curriculum developments within the subject area and share expertise within the department
• Quality assure provision to ensure the highest standards
• Share best practice in subject meetings across the School and Greenshaw Learning Trust
• Keep up to date with new developments in Education
• Lead improvements on outcomes and opportunities at a departmental level
• Share in the responsibility for, and commitment to, the safeguarding and promotion of the well-being and discipline of all students
• Ensure curriculum planning necessary; incorporating whole school policies, contributing relevant units/components to other school syllabuses, as may be required
• Encourage the selection of suitable teaching and learning styles, materials and subject matter in providing a differentiated approach to students
• Encourage team members to keep abreast of developments in their subject areas
• Monitor and analyse the academic performance of students on an ongoing basis
• Devise and implement appropriate revision/intervention strategies
• Complete all self-evaluation documentation, in particular data analysis of student performance at KS3, KS4 and Post-16 as part of the whole school self-evaluation process
• Perform particular assigned duties at the reasonable direction of the school Headteacher or their designated representatives
• Attend regular team meetings for briefing, consultation, sharing of good practice and training
• Provide subject information and an additional link with parents/carers and others in relation to work in your area
• Support the effective induction for new staff and trainees (if applicable)
• Undertake a designated programme of teaching across all key stages
• Teach consistently high-quality lessons
• Plan and deliver schemes of work and lessons that meet the requirements of KS3, 4 and 5
• Be a role model for students, inspiring them to be actively interested in your subject
• Complete the relevant documentation to assist in the tracking of students
• Set expectations for staff and students in relation to standards of achievement and the quality of learning & teaching
• Prioritise and manage time effectively, ensuring continued professional development in line with the role
• Follow the school policies and procedures
• Ensure the effective/efficient deployment of classroom support
• Maintain discipline in accordance with the school procedures, and encourage good practice with regard to punctuality, behaviour, standards of work and homework
• Update professional knowledge and expertise as appropriate to keep up to date with developments in teaching practice and methodology

Qualifications and Experience:

• Hold at least 5 GCSEs or equivalent, including at least a Grade C/5 in Maths and English
• Hold a recognised degree (or equivalent) with a good classification in a relevant subject teaching qualification (QTS)
• Experience of holding a position of responsibility
• Experience and leadership development/training in Humanities Subjects
• Previous Head of Department experience within an Educational Setting
• Evidence of independent personal developments and wide reading of the latest research
• Leading colleagues to support improving outcomes
• Leading initiatives beyond your own subject
• Evidence of conducting lesson drop-ins and coaching colleagues
• Be an excellent classroom practitioner
• Ability to teach your subject area up to Key Stage 5
• Knowledge of the latest subject-specific thinking, including research and subject associations
• Evidence of a positive impact on outcomes
• Desire to further raise overall achievement in your subject that seeks to promote the highest standards of teaching and learning
• Detailed knowledge of current curriculum and pedagogical developments in the teaching of your subject and the wider curriculum
• A flexible approach to the teaching of your subject that seeks to promote the learning opportunities of all students and to secure the highest possible levels of achievement
• Demonstrate a commitment to following the school's principles of teaching, learning and assessment
• Understanding of Exam Board specifications

Organization and Location:

We are currently recruiting for a Head of Humanities (Geography Specialist) to support, guide and join our established Humanities Team at the school. This is an exciting opportunity to join Henley Bank High School and become an integral member of the team.
