I am looking for an experienced C Software Engineer to support a government client on a 6 month contract. Due to the nature of the client, candidates who hold active SC clearance or are eligible for SC Clearance will be preferred.

This is a Software Engineer role focused on modernising existing applications and their database integration within a busy team environment. You'll work on updating and improving existing systems so they remain reliable, secure and aligned with client standards during a shift to newer database platforms. This is to support risk reduction and ensure applications continue to perform well as they are transitioned to Oracle and other modern database technologies.

What you'll focus on:

  • Understanding how current applications operate and connect to databases.
  • Supporting the transition of database connectivity from legacy platforms to Oracle.
  • Helping to ensure changes are well tested and meet security and compliance expectations.
  • Producing documentation that makes the systems easier to support and maintain.

Key responsibilities:

  • Analyse applications to understand their behaviour and how they access underlying databases.
  • Implement smaller, low-risk code updates to database connections, error handling and performance.
  • Work with senior engineers and database specialists to apply agreed database and connectivity improvements.
  • Contribute to unit, functional and regression testing and assist with fixing defects.
  • Create and maintain documentation such as design notes and runbooks to support ongoing operations.
  • Take part in agile ceremonies and collaborate with wider programme teams including data and testing.

What we're looking for:

  • Professional, commercial experience programming in C.
  • Experience working with relational databases as part of application development.
  • Exposure to or strong interest in Oracle Pro*C, PL/SQL and SQL.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a structured approach to understanding existing systems.
  • Ability to write clear, concise technical documentation.
  • Comfortable working as part of a team and contributing in agile environments.
  • Proactive about learning and developing your technical skills.
  • Flexibility to work 2 days onsite in Telford.
