Position Available: Senior OR Principal Opto-Mechanical Engineer

Location: Essex

Experience needed: We are seeking a highly skilled engineer with a strong background in opto-mechanical design and analysis, particularly in high-reliability environments like aerospace, automotive, or defence. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience designing and testing precision optical mounting systems that can withstand extreme structural, thermal, and dynamic stresses. Proficiency in CAD and FEA tools is essential, along with a solid understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, and requirements management. Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and managing subcontractor designs is highly desirable.

About the role

We are currently looking for a Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer to join a team who focus on developing cutting-edge optical systems for space applications. This role involves designing and analysing precision mechanical mountings for optics, ensuring they perform reliably under extreme conditions like launch vibrations and temperature fluctuations. You'll work on projects from concept to manufacture, supporting assembly and testing of optical systems and imaging packages.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Design and analyse opto-mechanical systems using CAD and FEA tools
  • Perform tolerance, thermal, and dynamic analyses for high-reliability environments
  • Collaborate with subcontractors and internal teams to meet technical requirements
  • Support hands-on integration and testing of systems
  • Manage technical documentation and present at design reviews
