Seeking an experienced Mainframe Datacom Engineer to support and enhance critical banking applications running within our IBM Z mainframe environment. This role will be responsible for the administration, support, optimisation, and modernisation of Broadcom Datacom databases that underpin key business and customer services. The successful candidate will work closely with application development teams, infrastructure engineers, database administrators, and regional stakeholders to ensure the stability, security, resilience, and performance of Datacom-based solutions. Given collaboration with teams across Spain and Latin America, Spanish language skills are highly desirable. This role presents an exciting opportunity to contribute to the continued evolution of a strategic mainframe estate while supporting integration with modern engineering and DevOps practices.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Database Administration & Support: Administer and maintain Broadcom Datacom databases within a z/OS environment. Perform database provisioning, configuration, monitoring, capacity planning, and performance tuning. Execute database backup, recovery, reorganisation, and maintenance activities using Datacom utilities. Monitor database availability and proactively resolve performance and operational issues. Support incident, problem, and change management processes in accordance with company standards. Ensure database resilience, integrity, and regulatory compliance requirements are met.
  • Mainframe Engineering: Support IBM z/OS infrastructure and associated mainframe technologies. Work with JCL, TSO/ISPF, SDSF, CICS, and batch processing environments. Analyse system and application performance using available monitoring and diagnostic tools. Participate in disaster recovery testing and business continuity exercises. Collaborate with infrastructure teams to implement upgrades, patches, and platform improvements.
  • Application Support & Development: Support Datacom-based applications developed in COBOL and other mainframe technologies. Work with development teams on database design, access path optimisation, and query performance. Review and support application releases into testing and production environments. Troubleshoot application and database-related incidents across the software development lifecycle. Contribute to code reviews and technical design discussions.
  • Modernisation & Continuous Improvement: Assist with the integration of Datacom environments into modern engineering toolchains. Support API enablement, automation initiatives, CI/CD adoption, and DevOps practices. Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency through scripting and automation. Contribute to strategic initiatives involving cloud connectivity, application transformation, and mainframe modernisation. Maintain technical documentation, standards, and operational procedures.

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Datacom Expertise: Strong hands-on experience supporting Broadcom Datacom (CA Datacom) databases. Knowledge of Datacom architecture, utilities, database structures, and performance tuning. Experience with database backup, recovery, reorganisation, and capacity management. Understanding of database security, access control, and audit requirements.
  • Mainframe Technologies: Extensive experience in IBM z/OS environments. Strong working knowledge of: JCL, TSO/ISPF, SDSF, CICS, VSAM, RACF, Mainframe batch processing. Familiarity with system monitoring and diagnostic tools.
  • Development & Engineering: Experience supporting applications developed in COBOL. Good understanding of relational database concepts and data modelling. Knowledge of software development lifecycle and change management processes. Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Professional Skills: Ability to analyse complex technical issues and provide sustainable solutions. Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills. Experience working within large, enterprise-scale financial services or highly regulated environments. Strong documentation and knowledge-sharing capabilities.

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Fluent or professional working proficiency in Spanish.
  • Knowledge of the banking, payments, or financial services sector.
  • Experience with DevOps tooling and automation frameworks.
  • Exposure to modern API integration and application modernisation initiatives.
  • Experience with Agile delivery methodologies.
  • Familiarity with Git, Jenkins, Ansible, UrbanCode, or similar deployment and automation tools.
  • Understanding of hybrid cloud and distributed platform integration with mainframe environments.
  • Broadcom Datacom certifications or equivalent practical experience.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Relevant Mainframe, IBM Z, Broadcom Datacom, or database certifications desirable.
