The purpose of the Senior Customs Clearance Operator is to process Customs clearances at the Lichfield or Dover site, calculating & processing duties and taxes. The role requires entering details into specialised customs software (CDS, CNS, Destin8, CFSP, Pentant, ASM Sequoia) and issuing the correct documents on behalf of the customer to ensure timely and efficient customs clearance.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
- Process primarily, but not exclusively, Road Freight customs clearances for all customers within the relevant legal guidelines.
- Work closely with existing customers to maintain service levels.
- Liaise with customers, suppliers, government agencies, freight forwarders, importers, exporters, etc., to prepare and process custom clearances for Hellmann UK.
- Arrange Import clearances into Bond & removal from Bond for Road, Sea and Air freight when required.
- Identify opportunities for developing value‑added services for existing customers.
- Process clearances using specific customs systems (Destin8, CNS, CDS, ASM Sequoia).
- Liaise with Hellmann operational and sales teams for day‑to‑day customs enquiries.
- Complete accurate customer invoices with correct values, declarations and HS codes.
- Arrange ad‑hoc Customs shipments for Hellmann Partners and issue the corresponding invoices.
- Interface with HMRC regarding compliance issues as required.
- Mentor and support junior staff, assisting with queries and advice.
- Tackle more complicated and challenging clearance processes.
- Attend customs‑related seminars or courses to maintain knowledge of legislation and requirements.
- Maintain knowledge of Customs Clearance legislation, laws and regulations.
- Act as the point of contact for customs clearance issues in the absence of the Customs Clearance Managers and Supervisors.
- Support the development, understanding and training of less experienced Customs Clearance staff.
- Provide out‑of‑hours support for customs clearance requirements.
Required Knowledge & Experience
- Substantial understanding of all relevant customs laws and regulations, with a commitment to keeping up‑to‑date with changes.
- Ability to advise customers on import/export restrictions, tariff systems, insurance requirements and related matters.
- Experience of working within a customer‑facing environment.
- Substantive experience of Customs clearance processing.
- An understanding of the law and regulations surrounding Customs Clearance requirements.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Ability to work effectively under own initiative.
- Competence in commercial IT packages including Word, Excel, e‑mail, etc.
- Education in Maths and English (oral & written) to GCSE / Standard Grade or equivalent; grades A–C.
- Highly competent computer skills in all areas of Microsoft Office.
- Customer service excellence and effective communication skills.
