Helicon Quantum Systems is developing a Rydberg-atom-based terahertz (THz) imaging system for inline subsurface inspection of advanced materials.

We are looking for a Lead Engineer to take technical responsibility for transforming this technology from an experimental laboratory system into a robust, integrated instrument suitable for industrial use.

You will own the system architecture, translate application requirements into engineering specifications and coordinate the development and integration of optical, atomic, THz, electronic, mechanical and control subsystems.

This is a hands‑on systems engineering role requiring both technical leadership and practical involvement in prototype development, integration and testing.

Responsibilities

  • System architecture: Define the overall instrument architecture, engineering requirements, subsystem interfaces and performance specifications.
  • Multidisciplinary integration: Coordinate the development and integration of laser‑excitation systems, atomic‑vapour hardware, THz illumination, optical fluorescence detection, electronics and controls.
  • Engineering development: Translate experimental concepts into practical engineering solutions, evaluating performance, complexity, reliability and maintainability.
  • Prototype development: Lead the assembly, commissioning, troubleshooting and iterative improvement of integrated prototypes.
  • Verification and performance: Establish test procedures and evaluate imaging performance, system stability, repeatability and operational robustness.
  • Technical coordination: Plan and coordinate engineering activities, conduct design reviews and resolve technical dependencies across disciplines.
  • Industrialisation: Guide the transition towards an instrument suitable for operation in industrial manufacturing environments.

What We're Looking For

We are looking for an engineer with substantial experience developing and integrating complex engineering systems.

  • Strong systems engineering skills, including system architecture, requirements definition and interface management.
  • Hands‑on experience designing, developing, integrating and troubleshooting complex hardware systems.
  • A strong technical foundation in photonics, experimental physics, quantum technologies, instrumentation or a related engineering discipline.
  • Experience working across multiple technical disciplines, including some combination of optics, electronics, mechanics, instrumentation and control systems.
  • Ability to identify technical risks, evaluate engineering trade‑offs and make sound system‑level decisions.
  • Experience taking technical responsibility for significant development activities and working effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • A rigorous, practical approach to experimentation, testing and problem‑solving.

Candidates will typically have five or more years of relevant professional or research experience. Equivalent demonstrated capability is equally relevant.

We value engineering versatility and practical achievement over narrow specialisation.

  • Additional Experience
  • Atomic, molecular and optical physics, particularly Rydberg‑atom or atomic‑vapour systems.
  • Laser systems, laser stabilisation and optoelectronic instrumentation.
  • Fluorescence imaging, cameras and optical detection systems.
  • Experimental automation, control electronics and measurement systems.
  • Precision optomechanics and thermal or mechanical stability.
  • Development of instrumentation for industrial applications.

Experience with every subsystem is not expected. The ability to understand unfamiliar technologies and integrate them into a coherent system is more important.

  • Employment: Permanent, full‑time.
  • Working hours: 40 hours per week.
  • Annual leave: 28 days plus England and Wales bank holidays.
  • Pension: Employer contribution of 5% of gross annual salary.
  • Location: Oxford area, UK.
  • Working arrangements: Hybrid working is possible where compatible with project requirements.

Regular on‑site work will be necessary for experimental development, prototype integration and testing.

  • Expected start date: January 2027.

Applicants must already have the right to work in the UK. Visa sponsorship and relocation assistance are not available.
