The Head Sports Therapist is responsible for leading the club’s medical and injury management programme. This role oversees injury prevention, assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, return-to-play planning, and matchday medical provision for all players. The Head Sports Therapist works closely with coaching staff, S&C coaches, analysts, and club leadership to maximise player availability and performance.
Key Responsibilities- Injury Prevention & Player Care
- Develop and implement evidence-based injury prevention programmes.
- Conduct regular movement screenings, physical assessments, and wellness monitoring.
- Provide pitch-side support during training sessions, ensuring appropriate warm-up and cool-down protocols.
- Maintain strong professional relationships with players to encourage early reporting of issues.
- Injury Assessment & Treatment
- Provide immediate assessment and management of acute injuries.
- Deliver effective manual therapy, taping, massage, and rehabilitation treatments.
- Create individualised treatment plans for injured players.
- Liaise with external medical professionals when escalated care is required.
- Rehabilitation & Return-to-Play
- Design and oversee progressive rehab programmes for short- and long-term injuries.
- Collaborate with the Strength & Conditioning coach to integrate gym-based rehab.
- Conduct return-to-play testing to ensure players meet physical and medical standards before rejoining training.
- Matchday Medical Provision
- Lead medical set-up and duties for home and away fixtures.
- Provide pitch-side first aid and emergency management.
- Ensure all equipment (first aid kit, splints, AED, etc.) is properly maintained.
- Leadership & Management
- Manage and support assistant physios, sports therapists, or student interns.
- Drive professional standards across the medical department.
- Coordinate communication between the Manager, coaching staff, medical staff, and players.
- Attend staff meetings to report on player availability and medical updates.
- Be able to oversee all teams under the club’s name including women’s and u18’s squad.
- Administration & Compliance
- Maintain accurate medical records for all players on a club system.
- Ensure safeguarding, health & safety, and sports-governing-body regulations are met.
- Oversee ordering, budgeting, and inventory of medical supplies.
- BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy, Physiotherapy, or related discipline.
- Accredited member of a recognised professional body (SST, BASRaT, CSP, HCPC if Physio).
- Relevant FA recognised first aid/trauma qualification (Minimum ITMIIF).
- Experience delivering hands-on treatment within a sports performance environment.
- Strong understanding of rehabilitation protocols and return-to-play processes.
- Experience in Full time football.
- Ability to work evenings/weekends based on training and match schedule.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Confidence managing multiple cases simultaneously.
- Ability to work under pressure in competitive environments.
- Highly professional and reliable.
- Player-centred approach with strong empathy and trust-building skills.
- Detail-oriented, organised, and proactive.
