We're looking for a Service Designer to join hedgehog lab on a contract basis, working across government projects where the design challenges are genuinely complex and the outcomes genuinely matter. You’ll map end-to-end service journeys, identify failure points, and work across organisational boundaries to design services that work for the people who use them, not just the people who commission them. You’ll be as comfortable in a workshop with policy teams as you are in a design critique.

Location note: This role may require presence at an office in Newcastle for approximately 1–2 days per week. While this isn't confirmed, it's something candidates should be prepared for. We’d therefore encourage applications from candidates based within a commutable distance of Newcastle.

You’ll Bring:

  • Experience designing services in the public sector or regulated industries
  • Strong skills in service blueprinting, journey mapping, and facilitation
  • The ability to navigate ambiguity and work with incomplete information
  • Experience influencing decisions at a strategic level, not just execution
  • Familiarity with GDS standards and the GOV.UK Service Standard

Why hedgehog lab? You’ll be joining a consultancy with 20 years of experience trusted by global brands, working at the intersection of AI and software engineering. The work is genuinely at the frontier of where the industry is heading, and you’ll have the space to grow with it.
